Adolf Hitler Autograph Discussion: Should we allow them here?

Hi guys. I bought an autograph about 10 years ago, made by Adolf Hitler in 1935 in Munich on a postcard and I'm thinking about selling. Does anyone have a clue if it is genuine? Have mailed around questions to different pages but get no good answers. / Marcus

I will strongly disagree with banning Hitler and etc...

For the simple reason that if it's a signature, then it's a valid discussion.

IF we start to categorize people as mass murderers then the list could ultimately include USA President's and so on (as you already pointed out Steve).

My perception has always been a bit different than most people's in regards to Hitler. And I completely disagree with many people on how they view him and take it too personal even to this day. Both sides of my family were directly affected by Hitler and WW11. My Mother and Grandparents being from Austria during those times (my Grandfather actually kidnapped by the SS) and my Father being from England during those times. And still, I don't feel the need to ban Hitler discussions. He was a very important part of the past and I would have no problem at all owning one of his signatures.

That's my point of view and I hope it doesn't create too much of a political debate here because that just leads to trouble with a capital T.

I appreciate the fact this discussion is still open as I did not realize it was a red flagged item. But I just don't think what people's feelings are about Hitler should have any logical bearing on his signature.

I would like to add to this signature...

I know nothing of the forgeries out there and can only assume there are many in circulation. So this would be a big reason for caution. And again, I do feel it doesn't quite match well enough with c. 1935, although it is very close. This definitely requires someone with a lot of skill and experience to make a proper judgement.

Some people like to collect autographs of bad guys and dictators.

Even worse than Hitler would be people like Breivik (killed 77 people) or those Bulger killers (Jon Veneables even laughed when another prisoner asked why he & Robert killed a 2 yr old , he got so angry he choked Venables)

To each his own. Personally I'm not a fan of these signatures. Figures like Hitler, Pol Pot and Amin just don't interest me and I can understand why some would find them offensive. I do look at them though if somebody has one. I just don't think of them as autographs. The thought of somebody running up to these guys asking for an autograph to me is absurd. Just like I think mailing serial killers asking for autographs is pretty dumb.

But on same note I'd think nothing of owning a signature from folks like Billy the Kid, Jesse James or Bonnie & Clyde. Maybe even a Dillinger or Capone signature. Just waiting for Coaches Corner to list one of these on a baseball.

Well, he is a piece of history - for better or worse.

Politics (especially during time of war) is such a touchy subject no matter how you look at it. Some could argue having an autograph of any of the current US Presidents is repulsive. But banning a discussion about Hitler's autograph? I don't think the OP is a Nazi sympathizer by any means - it looks more to me like he's interested in collecting historical autographs, if anything. What really is wrong with that?  Apart from the people who have died under his leadership and his orders, he's dead now and his Nazi party lost the war. Not a great way to be remembered - but it's still important history that shouldn't be whitewashed or forgotten.

There are some degenerate collectors out in this hobby who happen to collect good people. With that said, what's wrong with the idea of good collectors collecting autographs of degenerates in history?

Steve, this site is the go-to for nearly all things signed from what I've seen and thats due to your hard work and the efforts put in by members who know their stuff. Because you've built this site up yourself, you certainly have every right to make the final decision about whether or not Hitler items get discussed here publicly but as we have all seen over the years, different people collect different stuff. I have to agree with goodcat here. My personal opinion is although I certainly wouldnt want one in my collection, if it's an autograph and if theres a question about it, it's worth discussing. As you said, military sigs are important. I think for most who collect stuff like that, it's about having a piece of history. A very dark history, in this case- but history.

If the results didnt show up on google, I dont think it would reach a portion of the people who are looking for help on these items. I personally found the site by google search a few years ago myself looking up help for a Joplin item.

Although, I dont think anyone would hold it against you if you decided not to allow it. You want to help the hobby, but you dont want to offend. It's a double edged sword for sure.

I'm repulsed by him or any one who would want it except in a museum to know what a murder he was

but u do have a autograph furum so I guess its part of the hobby I just woudnt be proud to own or want to know about it unless it went to the holicust museum as a learning thing

john, you have a very impressive past and a collection to prove it. We all know this about you and respect you for it.

BUT...

If you look into the personal lives of many of your autographs, should we be offended by them? Not all were angles and we all know it. It just depends what a person views as the "devil within."

Speaking of the "devil within".... I'm going to put on some HANKIII right now "Rebel Within" haha I have his IP sig on my leather vest

Do you understand my point?

oopsy

sp correction

Angels not angles

I don't think there was basically any one really as bad as hitler and now whith the rise of white suopremency back on the rise again I don't think how u can compare him to anything in my collection or a musician.

and musians aren't perfect but they didn't try to earase a race of people.

I think u should visit dachue or aushwiet or pol pot and see what he did in Cambodia  iv  been to there camps and then make up your mind. you will not be the same peron

good points john

but I didn't really mean to directly compare Hitler to your autograph collection.

I indirectly meant that people will be offended by almost anyone. Some people don't draw a line as to the degree of a sin or immoral behaviors.

Of course AH was a monster of EPIC proportions, but that shouldn't mean we should censor the truth.

PLUS , this forum is ONLY about a signature. It is not the intention to bring out the moralities behind a person's signature. The topic is about INK, not about BLOOD.

I completely understand your point. And my point is soley based on a censorship point of view.

BTW... you haven't actually stated whether you think it's ok or not ok to permit Hitler signatures here. This is not a discussion about Hitler... it's about his autograph. BIG diference

sorry I missed responding to this.

I don't need to visit those places for the simple fact I have first hand family experiences and stories to live by. And I've heard those stories since I was a child. I know who he was and what he did and I'll repeat again that I come from a background of family who were directly affected by Hitler and the SS.

I don't need to see some derelict building to remind me of things I already know. I've heard the stories and seen the mental and emotional scars.

And what I know still has nothing to do with banning someone's signature in a public forum.

Right now, this is the most important thread to me

plus one .
