I'm doing this posting for therapy as much as anything else but I thought it would also be good to show what I'm 99.9% sure is a genuine - for a change - Amy Winehouse .

This signed newspaper from 2004 ended on eBay last night. I'd left an extremely hefty eSnipe bid but for the first time ever - after many hundred successful bids over many years - my snipe bid didn't trigger. The final price was £440.

Just a few questions/observations:

1. I wonder why it didn't go higher? The provenance is as solid as you can get, the autograph is early and bold, and it is an attractive photograph that was probably never published anywhere apart from this local newspaper. I can only think that the format and newspaper-quality paper would not have made it easy to display or re-sell.

2. Has anyone else had such a frustrating experience with snipe bidding? I've had snipe bids not work before due to seller restrictions but that is all. The most frustrating thing was that I was actually watching the auction end so I could have easily bid manually in the last few seconds.

3. I have a personal interest in the item as it was signed in my home town and I know the original owner well. If anyone sees this being re-sold (e.g. at RR Auction) I'd be grateful for a tip-off.

Sorry you lost it but 440 is not very expansive for a Amy. The reason why it only fetched 440 is basically the item that is signed. Vinyl - Poster - Photo - CD - anything else That is usually the running order. That graph on a vinly is easy 1500 USD. But I am sure if it is for re-sale somewhere the asking price is 1k+

Wow !! The one that got away. Happens to me a few times with Esnipes. I was short on points or tokens which I had to top up in order to bid. Missed a few items because of that !!!!! ;)

I never heard of eSnipes.

It is a service you have to subscribed to bid on your behalf on Ebay. It will bid on the last second before the auction ends. You just have to input your highest amount that you want to bid on an item. There is a saying when you loss the auction . "You Got Sniped!!!" :D

Are they the only snipe service?  I looked them up, tho. Cool service.

I'm sure they are not the only snipe service. eSnioe used to be part of eBay but are now independent I think. As I said earlier, this is the first time I've had a problem with them. Perhaps there was a very temporary interface problem.

You have to give them your eBay password. Log in details.

I have not seen other same services equivalent to ESnipes.

I did a quick Google and found this article that mentions 5 other tools (Rapidcatch, Gixen, EZ Sniper, Bid Napper and You Bidder). Here is a link:

5 best sniping software that bids for you on eBay (windowsreport.com)

As for eSnipe, this is the response I got:

"Sometimes there are interruptions that cause your bid to not be applied at eBay in time. This could be because eBay is slow and sluggish, a problem from eSnipe servers or most times it is due to a slow down or congestion along the internet pathways in between.  There is also the chance that your bid was one of those "lost packets", where a block of information just goes missing while being sent over the internet. It's really hard to say most times, which of these it is and it is near impossible to prevent all together.

eSnipe has done a good job, as you know, to keep these problems to a minimum.  On an average day we place 15,000-30,000 bids and miss less than 1% of these bids due to technical issues like above.

I am sorry your bid did not make it to eBay, but that is part of the risk associated with bidding in the last seconds of an auction. We warn of these risks in our Membership Agreement, FAQ and HELP sections."

I've had far less then 1% "fail rate" but perhaps some people use more ambitious buffer times like 1-2 seconds.

I've been using eSnipe for years. Never had a problem with it. Great service IMO.

The problem is that there are very few actual auctions on eBay these days. Almost everything is fixed price listing with make offer.

It's not a fun as it used to be. I also collect comic books and I rarely buy them on eBay anymore. Overpriced and overgraded fixed price listings. I get better price, product and  service buying from dealer websites.

I pick up tons on bargains on buy it now. I'm hardly ever successful on auction. I've just sold a Marc Bolan page for £900 I pick up recently for £250.
