So I recently sent money via Amex for an autographed poster I found on Offerup.
They have a shipping option, so imagine my surprise when I excitedly opened the package to find that the seller shipped me an empty tube full of plastic bags. Of course I reported the buyer and filed a buyer protection claim, as well as filing a claim with Amex.
The crazy part is, this person has what you would call a good “reputation” on the app. Hundreds of sales and a 5 star rating.
Needless to say, it will be more than interesting to see how this he said/ she said plays out. Luckily it wasnt an obscene amount of money, but money all the same.
A word of caution - there are A LOT of scumbags operating at large in the world today. I ONLY use American Express outside of Paypal for this very reason.
Protect yourselves folks. And if its too goot to be true...

Please share the seller's name and OfferUp link when you can. Thanks
I was victim to another scam on ebay by a seller who had thousands of stars on ebay The item was clearly not as described and had been altered to make it more valuable, - and I sent it back . One minute before midnight when ebay would have been able to legally refund the money the seller responded by saying that I had returned him an empty box without the item inside. Eventually I got my money back but it was touch and go, - because who were ebay to believe , a seller with thousands of positives or someone like me who doesnt really use ebay that much ? It was also a good lesson learnt.
Sad, isnt it, Michelle?
The world is a very troubling place for honest people who play by the rules these days.
Something similar happened to me on eBay years ago with a Jimi Hendrix concert poster at a great price. Not only did I receive an empty tube, it was followed shortly thereafter by a hefty customs bill. I didn’t end up losing any money, but it was a big hassle.
Also you should be VERY careful about doing any trades with people you don't know. Since no money is changing hands and Paypal is not involved -- you are very likely to open your package to find garbage (literally) inside -- while the thief has your valuable item you sent in good faith. This happened to me once -- but I caught on before I sent my item -- so the thief wasted his time and the money he spent on international postage.
That was also a member here, Bruce. We need to remember that just because someone is a member doesn't mean they're safe to do business with.
Yes, I remember he was from Poland and had recently joined AML. While the majority of members here operate in good faith, there are always a few rotten apples. ALWAYS use Paypal goods/services as you'll be protected.
