BEWITCHED was a long running television series about a man who falls in love and marries a witch.   There had been a Frederic March and Veronica Lake movie called I Married a Witch (1942) although the success of the Jimmy Stewart movie Bell, Book and Candle (1958) played a role in the TV series.

Bewitched starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha and Dick York as her husband Darren Stephens.  York was later replaced by Dick Sargent.   Star of stage and film, Agnes Moorehead, played Samantha's mother Endora.   David White played Larry Tate Darren's hot-headed boss.  William Asher was the producer and director of much of the series he was the husband of Elizabeth Montgomery.   It was Asher who also cast most of the players.   If people were easy to work with, he would often use them over and over.

Elizabeth Montgomery after the series ended starred in many dramatic roles far different than her Samantha Stephens role.   She played Lizzie Borden in a mini-series.   Her autograph is uncommon, and often forged.  This is an example of her autograph at the time Bewitched was first on the air.   It is part of the famed John Verzi collection that Tom Kramer purchased.

I will list the autographs as I put them on in order below :

Mabel Albertson played Darrin's mother on Bewitched and Howard Sprague's mother on The Andy Griffith Show.  This is from an index card part of the Peter Hanson collection.

Years ago I picked up an Elizabeth Montgomery check.  I searched ebay this week and they've certainly trended upward in price.

I think a lot of prices on eBay have moved higher because of a few sellers that have big prices.  Someone thinks oh it is worth that.  I am not sure how many are selling for those prices.  May be wrong but kind of suspect a lot sit there.  I have a couple of hers, and Dick York checks.  Might have Agnes Moorehead too.

MAURICE EVANS (1901-1989) was on 12 episodes of Bewitched but his character was so impressive it seems like he was on a lot more.  Evans was a distinguished stage actor and film star.  His voice unmistakable as Dr. Zaius in Planet of the Apes and Beneath the Planet of the Apes.  Evans was also in a favorite made-for-tv movie The Brotherhood of the Bell with Glenn Ford.  He was the friend of Rosemary Woodhouse in Rosemary's Baby.   He had two turns as the villain "The Puzzler" in Adam West's Batman. On Bewitched he was Maurice the father of Samantha.  He appeared in all seasons except 4 and 7.   This is uninscribed index card from the John Verzi Collection.

what is interesting is that tBewitched had many different writers yet the script was always high quality

I agree michelle.  Much of the credit for the quality of the show goes to William Asher the producer and director of many episodes.  He was the husband of Elizabeth Montgomery.  The level of writing always seemed consistent.   There were a lot of expensive sets and pyrotechnics that could be dangerous.  Elizabeth got burned in the kitchen set one time because they used a bit too much pyrotechnics.  You can see the quality of the sets.

PAUL LYNDE (1926-1982)  played the mischievous Uncle Arthur.  He was well known for movies such as Send Me No Flowers (1964) and Bye Bye Birdie (1963).  Lynde appeared in three episode of The Munsters playing Dr. Dudley,  Perhaps best known as the center square on Hollywood Squares.  His own show The Paul Lynde Show was unsuccessful even with several Bewitched actors appearing on it.  Mabel Albertson played his mother-in-law for two episodes on his show.  Lynde's autograph is sought after and uncommon.  This is from the John Verzi collection.

ALICE GHOSTLEY (1923-2007) perhaps best known for playing Esmeralda on Bewitched and Bernice on Designing Women.   She played Bea Arthur's mother-in-law in an episode of Golden Girls.  She had dramatic roles such as Aunt Stephanie in To Kill a Mockingbird and the season one, episode eight "Bad Medicine" on Kolchak: The Night Stalker.    When Frances Bavier (Aunt Bee) left Mayberry R. F. D. Alice Ghostly came on the show as a replacement "Cousin Alice."  Her Esmeralda role on Bewitched came after the real-life death of Marion Lorne who played Aunt Clara.   Her most memorable roles were in comedy.  She played Murray the cop's wife Mimi in an episode of The Odd Couple.  She also appeared in the movie The Odd Couple II.   This is from the John Verzi collection.

GEORGE TOBIAS (1901-1980) played Mr. Kravitz the next-door neighbor of Darrin and Samantha on Bewitched.  Tobias was a well-known character actor and among his earliest films was the 1939, The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Charles Laughton.  Tobias and Sandra Gould reprised their roles as Mr. and Mrs. Kravitz on the series Tabitha in 1977.  Reportedly Gould did not like Tobias partly like Vivian Vance she thought her onscreen partner was too old.

George Tobias played Abner Kravitz the next door neighbor on Bewitched.  This autograph is from 1960s.

ALICE PEARCE (1917-1966) played the first Gladys Kravitz the nosy neighbor on Bewitched.  Pearce was a character actress in mostly comedic roles.  She appeared in the Jerry Lewis comedy The Disorderly Orderly in 1964.  It is her role on Bewitched that is she best known for.  She appeared in 27 episodes.  She was ill during her last work on the show and died before it aired.   Pearce was only 48 when she died and may be one of the reasons her autograph is scarce.

Alice Pearce the first "Gladys Kravitz" until her untimely death.  This is from the early 1960s in-person collection of Jack Kuster.  This card is on eBay now.  One of the ones I am missing and a great example, but out of my price range.
