Bon Scott - I hope it’s real

i just picked up this up. It looked pretty good to me, so I got it. It does come with a full LOA from JSA. what do you think? Most of the Bon Scott fakes I’ve see have been pretty obvious. If this isn’t real, they did a nice job with it overall. But I think it’s likely authentic. Hope you agree. The last couple of Bon Scott cuts similar to this have gone for over $1200 a piece with buyer’s premium included at RR Auction and that didn’t even include an LOA from a major TPA...I don’t believe. That would be another $150! Having said that, I still believe that Bon Scott’s Autograph is one of the most undervalued autographs in the hobby. His autograph is almost as scarce as Jimi Hendrix, and look where cuts of Jimi Hendrix have gone. And Bon Scott’s popularity is incredibly high too.

I updated the picture. This is what my Bon Scott looks like, warts and all, now that it is in my possession. I just received it in the mail today. The autographs is pretty large when you see it in-person. I was pleasantly surprised. In this case anyway, bigger is better.

Approximately how many authentic examples have you seen? I would imagine that Bon is rarer, but I don’t follow sales of his signature.

Yes, Hendrix is a rock icon. Bon Scott could probably be described as one too. Who is and who isn’t is always up for debate. Icons like John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Mick Jagger aren’t debatable, imo.

I would also say to the average Joe and Mary, Jimi Hendrix is a more identifiable and famous name than Bon Scott. One of the reasons I believe that Bon Scott prices will continue to rise is because of the millions of AC/DC fans around the world. I think AC/DC’s music really is timeless, and Bon Scott’s fame will rise among younger fans as they grow and learn. That’s just my opinion.

I agree, Ballroom. Bon is pretty rare which is how Roger Epperson described Bon’s autograph. Exactly how rare, I’m not sure. I haven’t seen lot of authentic examples. Obviously, he’s not rare like a Honus Wagner T109 (?) baseball card.

But I think it would be interesting to know if the major TPAs keep a population count of how many of each celebrity they have authenticated...like I know PSA keeps population counts of sports cards by grading. They know exactly how many Jordan rookie PSA 8, 9, 10s, and so on they have graded.

I think it is a pretty signature. Re cards, how do they keep rack of crack-outs etc? To me it is like coins - pop numbers are essentially meaningless as most stuff (like Proof material 1880-1942) has not even been submitted and so on.

Thank you, Eric. I actually think Bon Scott has a nice-looking autograph as well. Also...great points on population counts as well. There are indeed times when, due to new discoveries, population counts can change quickly and unexpectedly. For example, although I don’t recall exact details, I believe there were something like 17,000 previously unknown cases discovered of 1986 Fleer Basketball cards (Jordan’s rookie card year) which would obviously change population counts once they were submitted. And consequently, the valuation of 1986 Fleer cards would be affected. If there’s someone who knows the details about the Fleer cards better than I, please clue me in.

And as population counts relate to autographs, precise record-keeping will probably be pretty elusive because there are many, many collectors who don’t even use the TPAs at all. Really, I can rake them or leave them. I certainly don’t put all my trust in their opinions...not by a long shot. We’ve all seen many of their mistakes. They are only human like the rest of us, and no one should ever blindly trust a sticker.

Thought I’d include a snippet of vintage AC/DC valuations with Bon Scott. This PSA/DNA encapsulated cut with Bon Scott, Angus Young, and Malcolm Young sold for $2,271 on Iconic Auctions in May 2014. People really seem to like encapsulated pieces for whatever reason. Does JSA encapsulate?
