What do you think about this Christy Mathewson autographed baseball?

It looks to me like it's authentic, but I cannot tell for sure.

Thanks.

Also, Dustin, Christy Mathewson passed away in 1925.

Do you realize just how rare an autographed baseball from Mr. Mathewson is?

Christopher that is an important point.  the rarity.   Back in the early 20's, people did not place any value on single signed balls, in fact, the more signatures the better.

Ruth may have been an exception but certainly true in virtually all instances.

Ruth was the exception, but probably starting in the mid to late 20's, after Mathewson passed away.  I don't believe there are many single signed Ruth balls from his Red Sox days, or his early yankee days. At least I don't recall seeing any.

True.

There are some Cobb singles from this period or before but Ruth singles dating before '25 are rare and generally barely legible when found.

Dustin,

These guys are good.

Just for value reference on an authentic Mathewson single signed baseball, in 2007 one that was fully authenticated by both PSA/DNA and JSA sold for $169,000 in a Huggins and Scott Auction, the highest price realized for a Mathewson single.

Heritage sold a lesser one a couple of years ago for $83,000.

Not sure what a good price seemed to be on this one but, if authentic, it would certainly be within this range and I'm pretty certain it was significantly less than either of these.

True. There are no bargains on these authentic big names. There are a ton of guys with the cash ready to scoop these up when they hit the market.

I'm really glad you said that, Dustin. Because now we know you're a real collector who's just trying to figure things out. And it shows how hard it can be to figure out what's going on in autographs.

I hope you spend some time here, asking and commenting as much as you want. Join www.Net54baseball.com if you haven't. You'll learn a lot there as well.

Dustin, there is a saying that is very appropriate in this hobby......if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Oh yes, the needle in the proverbial haystack is an authentic Christy Mathewson baseball.

Boy, Morales is wrong 99.9999% of the time, and lo and behold here is a genuine one, priced right alongside ones he knows are fakes.

That's the kind of guy he is- if you spot the real one, you get it at the price of the fakes.

Dustin,

if you want to just evaluate the signature, without considering the other aspects (rarity, age of ball, ink style etc) this style is fairly close to what we would consider "known" authentic examples.  But there is one very basic error in this signature, that does not appear in virtually any authentic Mathewson.  Do you know what it is?

It is too dark?
