Hi, I'm new here, so forgive me if I'm doing something wrong.  But I just wanted to get people's opinions as to the likelihood that this baseball signed Christy Mathewson is legit.  It does have a COA from JSA, but from other things I've read that doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot.  Thanks!

That is cheaper than i have seen.  I remember reading several times that a Mathewson sold at auction for six figures. Maybe somebody found a stash like the 7 extremely rare T206 Ty Cobb cards that were recently found in a paper bag when a family was rummaging through their great grandfather's old boxes. 15 were previously known to exists. Great find, but it increased the number those Cobbs in circulation by almost 50%. Maybe somebody found a stash of Mathewson balls.

4-5 Led Zeppelin albums signed by all including John Bonham for $3,995. The list of unbelievable bargains goes on and on.

I haven't checked, maybe they have that 1919 Whitesox team ball with Joe Jackson and M. Landis on the sweet spot.

If they don't, they probably can get it for you.

I'd have to wait for the ink to dry. I hate waiting.

The baseball was not at an auction, rather at the sale of the estate of a prominent family.  It wasn't cheap, and didn't sell during the estate sale itself, so afterwards a friend and I negotiated a price for it and bought it.  We are sending it off to auction, when the details are ready I will post a link here for that.

Nice acquisition Mr. Greaves !!!  Congratulations !!

Please do! It's an exciting purchase. I hope you do well with it.

I stated earlier that I would let you all know when the Christy Mathewson / Kenesaw Landis signed baseball would be up at auction.  It took a little while, but it is now ready to view in the Heritage Sports Collectibles Auction, ending May 13th.  Here is a direct link to the listing:

I'm not sure how they came up with the starting bid of $7,500, and estimate of $30,000+, which both seem very low to me, especially since it has LOA's from both PSA/DNA and James Spense.  I sure hope it does much better than their estimate!

Beautiful baseball. $30,000 seems low to me also. Interesting that there was an almost identical example that sold in 2011. I wonder what that one sold for.

I hope you get a good price when it finds a new home.
