I really don't what to say. I am very upset. I saw him perform so close, front and center, at Roseland in '96 on the 4-date (?) Ballroom Tour so close he literally spit in my face while singing. I was at his 50th birthday concert in NYC - he promised the next years would not be boring after blowing out the candles. He was right. A great loss. Inestimable. Count those who name him as an influence...I can't believe he is gone.

Hello Innuendo,
Yes, we can be heroes! I found this photo from the show I was front and center at - Roseland Ballroom, September 1996. There is a recording of Heroes from this show on YouTube. I would give anything for another moment of this experience. I remember the police had to close the entire street after the concert because so many people were there to congratulate him and seek autographs.

The Stars Look Very Different Today!
So sad!
Saw him 2 times, great memories.
I have his book station to station, from Genesis. It´s still avaiable:

That's pretty crazy Eric.... video was posted 4 days ago, starts off with him laying in bed saying "Look up here, I'm in heaven..."
What a legend.
End of a very myopic and misinformed story, but it is your opinion. Read some of Mozart's letters to his female cousin and other close female family dip into his extreme fascination with fecal matter for a better perspective of this "genius", which he certainly was. If you ever saw Bowie perform Moonage Daydream from 3 feet away, or Sweet Thing or...you'd think differently I believe. Maybe you did, who can say. Mozart had a huge body of work. He is not alone.

Taste is an accumulation and interpretation of the experiences of an individual - saying this or that is better or not is pure folly IMHO.
I can't think of any "pop" artist who has documented his death as in Lazarus - incredibly rich and complex symbolism. Watch Blackstar and tell me that is not Frida Kahlo discovering a Kahlo-esque bejeweled skull in that space suit which I believe was Major Tom's. That does not sound like pop.
The video for Lazarus...Memento mori all over the place. The bandages...we are no longer able to see Bowie, or him us, but still he sings. The mask effect is superb and very thought provoking. Bowie has used puppets and dolls many times in his career - some with bandages - as in the Outside Tour stage set or the puppet faces by Julian Schnabel seen in NYC in the September 1996 Ballroom Tour concert at Roseland and also at his 50th B'day concert in '97 as MSG. Bowie is also shown writing, trying to get it all down and out at a time when vantage is new and hopefully coalescing into something, but there is never enough time. This is when the skull an candle are seen - they are centuries old motifs that signify the passage of time and death. Someone asked if Bowie is "hiding" in that closet or "burying himself" - he is being silenced by death, who is under the bed and in the armoire (see Death and the Sculptor by D.C. French 1926 for another way of depicting this type of thing). This silencing, this death, is shown at the end when Bowie is fighting to move forward but is inevitably pulled backward into the armoire - and Bowie goes without blinking. The bluebird he references is, I believe, the bluebird from Over the Rainbow which was very popular in June/July 1969 when Judy Garland died and Space Oddity was Number 1. These videos are very dense with content. Blackstar appears to show a Kahlo skull found in a spacesuit (Major Tom it seems) by Frida herself. That scarecrow crucifiction...Much to digest!
No direct analogy for this work comes to mind, but it can't be unique.
It is, however, genius.
What did you see in these images?
Eric
