I think it might have a different barcode on the outside film? Would appear to be different from a standard book from what I can see but I’m happy to stand corrected.

The barcode sticker is underneath the shrink wrap.

Just received mine from Bookshop.org, inside cover plate stuck in, very happy. I was at The Royal Albert Hall gig and lucky to see him literally 6ft away from front row dead centre.

Edit: Sorry image is portrait but when uploaded it posts up rotated, don't know why?

Here is my copy:

Anyone know why forwarding services sometimes offer royal mail and then other times only DHL and FedEx

Also tacking on to this since it is my first time using a forwarding service. Trying ForwardVia per recommendations from this thread. Anyone know what we are supposed to do for the customs declaration? I didn’t see one to declare it as printed media. Worried about customs fees.

I wasn’t sure either but if you paste that image into ai google Gemini or google ai mode will explain each option

Alright, I guess I need to declare it as gift, still unsure of how to declare it as printed media though to avoid fees.

Their site is saying Royal Mail isn’t shipping to the US for some reason which isn’t true. I’m tempted to contact them and see since I feel like that would be the cheapest option. FedEx is £44 for me and DHL is £51 to ship to me.

Is printed media exempt from customs?

In any case, I believe that you have to specifically describe what's in the package.  Maybe that is on the next screen?

It is property "merchandise" and not "gift".  If the merchandise type is exempt then that is where the description of the contents helps you.

If they open the package and find an invoice for something marked "gift" then I assume that isn't good.

Books are exempt from VAT/customs fees- if you’re charged, raise a Form C285 to get a rebate (less handling fee, which is c. £8 for Royal Mail and £15 for FedEx).

It's not a gift though. Lots of people used to declare as gift to avoid customs fees, if they suspect it's incorrect it can cause your package to be put on hold at customs for investigation.

It's better to declare as merchandise (which it is) and then, where they ask for a description and value of goods, use the correct Harmonized System Code for books. If they are VAT exempt in your country then it should arrive without fees.

I contacted them and this was their response so not sure if it matters if I put it as gift or not. I will put as merchandise if you think that is the safer thing.

I guess my next question is, some people were hit with some large brokerage fees from FedEx for customs clearance. Does anyone know if DHL has the same issue? My experience recently (a book from Amaranthine Press based in Croatia) did not have any additional brokerage fees, but maybe that has changed within the last couple of weeks. It’s disappointing they are not offering Royal Mail. They transfer directly to USPS which would be the safest option to avoid additional fees.
