I have always said that widespread education is one of the primary ways we can help rid this hobby of forgeries/scammers. I just read that there is an ESPN "30 for 30" set to air later this year called "The Counterfeiter", which is about the FBI working with MLB players to uncover scams.
Here is a description:
" a documentary for the ESPN “30 for 30” series called “The Counterfeiter,” which should air in later this summer and includes a story that involved some big league ball players secretly working with the FBI during the turn of the millennium in an effort to nab those who were faking memorabilia."
Here is the project page:

This is great news for the hobby, this will most definitely plant a seed in a lot of people's minds and hopefully make them think twice before buying that super cheap autograph/"game used" item on eBay! If there are no buyers of forgeries, then the forgery sellers cannot make profit, which effectively wipes them out. Obviously there will be forgeries/scammers until the end of time, but widespread education like this is essential to the fight IMO. Can't wait to see it!
