Thanks. I'm wondering if the individual scans the signature and then has an ink stamp printed on a 3D printer , although I believe a stamp would produce better borders than these. Perhaps the edges are rounded to eliminate a pooling of ink and that is why they aren't sharp.
Whatever, the nature of these things, they are of low quality (especially the filled in letters), which may be indicative of their creation with respect to the pages still being bound during the application of reproduction. A plotter or other such device can "sign" a book. It still appears to me from this vantage that the "ink" was applied in one go - not like an Autopen. I don not believe they are stamps either. I will ask Steve to have a look.
this ebay seller has just ceated a new ebay store, called some bits and pieces, selling the same s***
Yep, and they've sold two books in the last couple of days including another hemmingway
All of which can be reported with item numbers. Show "it" correctly and they should listen.
This is clearly an organized fraud. I'm still waiting an a reply from ebay. The most recent books (2) will be reimbursed by ebay, but the one I bought in October will have to be contested through my credit card. I was wondering how he was going to proceed. There are now two instances of feedback that indicate the signatures were fakes. Two more from me and that is going to hurt business. I'm just an amateur collector and these were my prized books. If something seems too good to be true....
I dropped you a line, but I also wanted to comment here. Your saying that: "I'm just an amateur collector and these were my prized books" really struck me. I'm sorry for this experience you've had. I hope you can eventually acquire a genuine Hemingway that can be prized.
It is very unfortunate. I have asked Steve to have a look and perhaps comment on the method of creation. I haven't seen him logged in here so I suspect he is away for the New Year..
Thanks for all the help here. I thought I would provide an update. The two books that where still within the ebay return policy were refunded (still pending). The one I received in October is no longer covered by the ebay guarantee, so I'm having to use other means to try an get a refund. The seller has been giving me the runaround - trying to negotiate a refund in exchange for not leaving negative feedback. I've filed a fraud report with my credit card. Of interest, I found another book this individual sold on 22 Nov with the same signature. The seller still maintains this is all a misunderstanding with no explanation. I've attached the signature from the second book as well as the one from my book and the one from RR auctions. I think they are a match.
They are a match. That is physically impossible. You wrote "The seller has been giving me the runaround - trying to negotiate a refund in exchange for not leaving negative feedback", you told eBay as that is against the rules? Show those matches with descriptions and link to the CC company, eBay etc. and perhaps this thread. No human being can sign like that, with every measurable distance in exact proportion and relation to every point in another signature. It is just not possible.
I am very happy to have helped! :-)
A dealer in our hobby that I respect is a member of Autograph Hounds and I really appreciate his thoughts regarding what may to be the printing process involved here. The Hemingways seem similar to some supposed "vintage" film autographs we were looking at over there.
On one series of fakes from a particular seller involving a single film star we looked at, we saw what seemed to be an earlier print strike of the autograph and another that looked like it was a later, dryer run. There were some differences in the inking but not in the overall formation. We're thinking the seller of the fakes may have many of them, in different variations of ink strength and paper medium waiting to sell. Not hard to imagine something related going on here with the creator of these Hemingways.
Are the ones you are speaking about of a such low quality as these Papa "signatures?" A simple Image search found these matches in seconds online. The the lack of crossover, filled in letters and overall dead presentation are powerful tells, as well as the price accepted. Are you seeing this in your group discussions? Forgers often aim low, but these things are ridiculous.
