I've never been partial to "clipped signatures" and won't purchase them.

I'd like to forum members' opinion regarding signatures that have been clipped from letters/documents.

Personally, I believe clipping signatures from their original context compromises their value.  I haven't nor will I buy a clipped signature.

What do forum members think?

Most of the time I would have to agree.  But then there are other times where options are limited and you gratefully take what you can get.

You make a good point, especially if it is signature of someone who rarely signed anything.

Generally speaking I'm not interested in them but I'm sure there could be exceptions.

I'm like you, but I can't even bring myself to consider an "exception."

For me it can get murky.  Is a 3x5 cut really any different than a 3x5 index card?  If the cut is obviously removed from something else then I would have a tough time looking past that.  It's autograph vandalism.

While I do not like it I have bought clipped autographs of very rare people.  Joseph H. Hamilton a veteran character actor from The Andy Griffith Show and The Twilight Zone I have only seen three authentic signatures two from the same studio tax document and I have one of those.  I do not frame items so really prefer they be intact.  I would have paid far more for whole document, but it was already cut by the time it got on eBay.  I have a Karl Svenson that was cut from an endorsed check.  I have Irene Ryan that was cut I am pretty sure from an album page.  I paid a fraction of what I would have for the whole document.  Clipped signatures used to be very popular when I started collecting in the early 70s.  Often, they were mounted on an album page or card.  So, if it is the only way to get the signature I will buy.

I love that in the original post you wrote "I believe clipping signatures from their original context compromises their value."

OF COURSE IT DOES !!!!!!

That being said, like most people, I don't like them. And it's odd because, I don't frame my autographs, so it really shouldn't bother me. But it still does.
