I've often wonder why people who go into show business are annoyed by autograph seekers.

I never understood why people who go into show business are annoyed by (a) lack of privacy, and (b) giving autographs.

It seems to me that a lack of privacy and giving autographs go with the territory.

IMHO, celebrities have an unspoken "obligation" to sign autographs, after all, it's their fans that made them millionaires.

Contrary to all the trash that has been written about Joan Crawford, she highly respected her fans and felt she owed it to them to sign autographs and pose for pictures.

That is true about Crawford, but some of leters and photos are secretarial.

I have a slight friendly disagreement, Garrett.  I don't believe celebrities (usually in something like show business or sport) have any sort of "obligation" to sign autographs.  Yes, the fan have helped them make their millions.  But fans freely choose to do that by buying tickets for movies, paying streaming fees, going to sporting events, etc..

Celebrities are providing a product that we consume if we're their fans...but no one is twisting our arms to do so.  I don't believe we have a "right" to anything from them except the product that they provide if we pay for it.  If they want too sign an autograph for free, that's great!  But is a fan entitled to have them act one way or another based on our desires?

Just my two cents for what it's worth.

Maybe it's only old duffers like us who think that a celebrity should give autographs.  For the digital age, how about selfies with your favorite star?  Do most celebrities avoid those also?

I vaguely recall an interview with - I think - Jim Carrey, where he described how he detested that request for a selfie. Did he say something like that while he welcomed engagement with fans, this particular transaction just left him cold.

Maybe because it was more about the fan than it was about him. Lol, cry me another river - these gentle souls need nurturing.
