I'm calling it fake. I did some study of her autograph prior to purchasing two photos awhile back. Not an expert but have looked at more than a few comparing and contrasting.

The one you are showing in the scan is on one of those generic cards which, as we have discussed, offer no context whatsoever (eg. unlike a photo, contract, album page etc.) and can be easily used for forgery practice.

To me the flow of the letters just look to soft.  Most Bergmans I have seen have more straight and defined lines (hard, if you will).  The "er" in her surname in your scan are on an island by themselves whereas she usually connected them to the "g".  That last "a" in her surname is usually part of a flat line after the "m" and the line itself is not wavy but very straight.

See this photo:

Thanks, Etienne, for your extended answer. I see what you mean.

You are welcome.  Definitely aside from everything else, nearly every time I see a pristine blank card like your scan, it just puts me on alert.  It seems like those are the easiest medium to forge on as they can just be pitched and another one like it used if the forger doesn't feel he got it right.

Just my thoughts.

It's "the look"!

"The look" is an un-aged un-dedicated often atypical perfectly centered very legible signature on a plain card. Suspect in general; here I don't believe the OP is authentic.

KaiMi -  Here's another authentic example. I spotted this for sale at Regan's Autographs.  It's an in-person this time from 1974...so a bit later in her life.  See again here how straight and confidently defined the lines of her signature are.

Etienne and Eric - thanks a lot for your detailed answers and the task to find the example at regansautographs, which I had seen as well. I worried about the disconnected "er" and "the look" which from discussions in the past I knew was one of Eric's most important reasons to have doubts. These combined were the reason for me to ask before buying. So no damage done - thanks to you both!

KaiMi, Etienne and Eric have a valid opinion..I have a 1944 and a 1979 in person….neither can prove my opinion. Just throwing my grenade into the mix….This 3rd party has a lot  characteristics of your OP. You three can have at it.

Not sure I have a fully formed opinion on this Bergman yet.

However, I guess I've never really looked closely at those JSA Basic Certificates before. That bizarre montage doesn't exactly inspire confidence in a studied opinion of Classic Hollywood autographs.

(just having a bit of fun!)

No indeed. :)

That JSA looks fine. Classic Bergman.

KaiMi,

That's an excellent example of Bergman's autograph in my opinion. You'll find lots of Bergmans signed like that from the 1940s until the last years of her life. Make sure it's not a copy since they can be very deceiving these days. If it's not, I think you found yourself an Ingrid Bergman you can be proud of.
