Janis Joplin Signed Posthumously Released “Pearl” Reel To Reel From eBay Seller thenovascotiakid

This is from eBay seller thenovascotiakid. Janis Joplin apparently came back to life to sign this reel to reel copy of “Pearl.” This is from the auction description:

SOURCE:  This item came from the 4000+ piece collection of a second generation collector from the U.S.A with a lifetime of collecting and a stellar reputation who inherited a large collection of old and rare signatures spanning the early 1900s to present. He's earned a perfect record on ebay after selling 1000s of items.

I am an honest, serious collector and would never sell something I believe is not authentic. I do extensive reviews of anything I sell, and have a close friend who has authenticated for Disney and hard rock hotels if I need a second opinion... I only buy from dependable collectors who I research first and develop relationships with, or obtain myself...

I spoke with a rep and was told to describe the issue and send a message via the “Tell us what you think” link from the My eBay page.

This remained on eBay and someone supposedly purchased it today for $1,500.

That seller has forgeries wall-to-wall.

How is this even possible, nowadays?

Given the ease of modern communication, how is it possible for "known" fraudsters to perpetrate criminal activities openly wthout sanction (understand that I am not seeking an answer from you personally - lol).

If someone from your neighbourhood was going around in the hours of darkness smashing car windscreens as a hobby, he would swiftly be identified and arrested.

If a lowly bank clerk is pocketing the odd cash deposit , he is going, inevitably, to be found out and punished.

How is it, therefore, that these equally unlawful activities on - for example - eBay - are allowed to go unchecked? I really do not understand it.

Is it subjectivity - i.e. that someone's opinion that a certain person is forging autographs is just that - an opinion, which cannot be considered as "legal evidence"? What about tip-lines, then? Are these not just vehicles for heresay?

It makes no sense.

Is there nothing that can be done?

Are we not a community that can somehow muster enough clout or influence (amongst us all) to bring some attention to a scandalous, ongoing criminal activity?

I am so fed up right now, learning about one outrage after another, that it would be better for my mental health not to even come here anymore.

I can't be the only one who feels this way.

Unfortunately, there isn’t the same incentive for eBay to take action as there is in the scenarios you’ve mentioned because eBay would be losing revenue by removing these sellers. Of course, a dead person having signed an autograph is as glaringly obvious as it gets, but still nothing was done.

No one put a gun to anyone's head here forcing a purchase. The buyer made this decision on their own. This is the problem. This is why sites like this, communities like ours need to exist and continue to grow. I hate it as well. Watching crime happen right before our eyes with the criminal identified.. I mean he's right there. We can even send him messages and know he will read them without response. This would be such an easy bust but you can't expect money hungry eBay to do anything these days. I'm sure they are sitting around figuring out more ways to take funds as we speak. When I learned that shipping and even tax was built in to their selling fee, I was absolutely disgusted. I can understand shipping to stop a fee workaround, but to have a fee on tax just speaks to what eBay has become. There is no reason for it.

Anyways, I'm with you. I've done everything I can with this seller short of buying an item to see his return address but most likely a Canadian PO box.. maybe we should bombard all of his listings with continuous messages every single day but I could totally see eBay banning accounts for harassment instead of doing what is right.

For now, it's up to buyers to be educated and informed. Impossible no matter how strong this community is, we can't reach everyone. This will keep happening. The seller will continue to get away with it. Seriously, how infuriating.. continue on, create discussions like this for evidence to build once law enforcement decides to do something about it.
