I appreciate that, Joe. Just throwing my .02 into the hat. As far as I can see...

1) It was period signed and the paper aged and the pencil signature did not. This seems unlikely.

2) It was signed after the bill was aged. Odd choice. That bill does not look so much circulated as stored. The toning...

3) Other?

Authenticity is guaranteed with a money back guarantee but of course, no refund of authentication fees.  I compared it to John Wayne signatures from this period and I thought it matched up well but there is a reason that I come to you guys before pursuing.

Well, it seems we are evenly divided on this one. Hopefully, a few others would chime in. I understand the condition should be considered in terms of selling price. But, in my humble opinion, I can see where someone unprepared only had that available at the opportunity of getting the autograph. And, since it was the war, may have carried in around in some less than perfect conditions. Who knows. Got to remember this is over 76 years old and many things can happen in that period of time.

I believe this is genuine.

One possible explanation for the condition of the note could be....whoever had it signed somehow lost possession of it, who knows how, and it got lost into circulation and for all of those years anybody who might have noticed there was a signature on it just didn't know or didn't care to find out who's signature it was.

I don't think that pencil has seen any circulation at all. Maybe, if, perhaps - something doesn't seem right here.

Daniel, in situations like this, actually, anytime you buy an autograph, the seller of the autograph makes a difference. The seller is part of an autograph's provenance, which was an important part of autograph authentication until the major TPAs came about. Now it is not in the US.

Good forgeries abound, and they can fool the most seasoned experts at first. If you don’t know what you’re looking at, get the opinion of other members on the dealer.
