Thank you very much for stepping in here Pauline
Much appreciated
With you and Pug saying it is authentic, then that's good enough for me
Glad it got sorted
great post Pauline and thanks again for your inputs
I'll start by getting the book "Fragments" for further studies
The cheque in question was made out to N Lytess, who was Marilyn's acting coach Natasha Lytess. During the second half of 1951 Marilyn and Natasha moved into Natasha's new home in West Hollywood, so Natasha was Marilyn's landlord at that time as well a her acting coach.
So yes, I think it's conclusive this signing/cheque is real.
And if the writing is awkward, maybe it's because the situation was, as this relationship did not last long, Natasha had a huge crush on Marilyn and it was not reciprocated. Marilyn fired her coach ultimately.
You can find this information online here: https://www.curbed.com/maps/for-her-birthday-mapping-the-43-homes-o...
confirming the name on the cheque, along with knowing her secretarials didn't start until c. 1952-3 definitely accentuates the authenticity of this cheque
Well done Pauline. Very impressive
My pleasure, great fun actually realizing I was able to decipher the name on the cheque, ding ding - for a minute I couldn't understand why she was paying rent to her acting coach, but then a quick internet search sorted it.
That is impressive, Pauline. Thank you! You are clearly well informed and have restored my confidence in bidding.
+1
It's also of course, why she said that the money was for rent in printing, because she also personally paid for her own acting lessons to Natasha as well.
Is it common for checks and contracts to be secretarial signatures? I figured since these are legally binding they had to be authentic?
many superstars have secretary's sign legal contracts for them and yes it is legal. One has to have it approved at the bank. For example ....You and I can sign for our parents in a legal manner but must do the paperwork for it to be legally binding
I did a quick overlay on photoshop with another check that was authenticated. The size of the text and width of perforations appear to be the same. Is the watermark clear and visible under light? Do you have a UV flashlight? If so, check it under UV and see if anything glows.
Unfortunately, I will not have the ability to conduct this assessment. I will be bidding via telephone.
