For me, I would avoid such an item. If the story is clearly fictitious what else is? I mean no disrespect to Roger of course - rather, I am talking about not drinking from a potentially dirty well (the lie). I would just move on. That is just me.
But definitely ask Roger! That is not 1981.
I agree with Eric. This story is very concerning because it’s obvious to me this was not signed in 1981, at least it would seem. And if it was not signed in 1981, the story is bogus which makes me wonder about the autograph’s authenticity.
If it is real, why would the seller feel compelled to make up this elaborate story? I’m puzzled by this.
+1
I Send Roger an Email. I hope he can reply to it.
I was maybe hoping that the seller made a typo, but then again, who knows..
Regarding the buying, I bought the item out on ebay right before I made this thread, (i Didnt made the payment yet, just bought it out. But I was planning on doing that tomorrow. But iam getting a bit worried now too).
Because I dont know much about Autograph authenticity, I did research on Roger, and he seems like a very good authenticator, or whatever you call it. Also, I got ebay protection on my side if things so south I guess? But still. I dont wanna pay for an item if theres a chance its fake. Stupid me buying it out before iam 1000% certain. But the thought of having that item made me do it.
Also I used Roger's Quickservice, and he told me his CoA was atleast authentic, and with it the autograph aswell, in his opinion.
Plus to that, the seller also gives a lifetime guarantee on it. The seller said to me, and i quote;
''Yes, I guarantee Authenticity for Life. Ive been buying and selling autographs since 1980 and am considered one of the most reputable autograph dealers in the autograph hobby. About a year ago I was one of the Seven Greta Dealers in the Autograph Magazine "7 Great Dealers" . I am also a UACC Registered Dealer (#307). Not sure if you know the UACC but it is the oldest Autograph Collectors organization in the world and their Registered Dealer program is Very selective, as you cannot be a Registered Dealer is you even have ONE Authenticity Complaint against you.''
Thank you
But did you ask the date Roger thinks it was signed? That is indeed Roger's cert and he says it is authentic and that's fine, but the original collector is stating factually it was obtained in 1981? I would also ask Kevin Conway, member here, about this situation. He should respond and be helpful - nice guy. I like all my ducks in a row :) Especially expensive ones.
I am questioning the provenance and how it got attached, not authenticity or Roger's expertise. Many collectors place much importance on the provenance, so it is best to have it straight.
Let me reword - "I am questioning WHY the provenance got attached...". It is very suggestive of a problem somewhere.
I'm on my cell mostly today and I rarely give authenticity opinion on it because I learned the hard way—especially with Michael Jackson. If an autograph is clearly fake, I'm comfortable giving an opinion but rarely otherwise.
MJ's early 80s signatures are generally closer to mid-80s than late 1970s. He was 22 in 1980 and left his high school signature behind for the most part, and an 81 and a 79 look far different.
Something very important to keep in mind about MJ is that it can be very hard to date his autograph by style. He changed it up. You'll find mid-2000s that look like mid-80s. His Dangerous Tour autographs, that's 1992-3, often looked more like 1982 than 1991 autographs.
He often signed for the situation. His fancy and more formal autographs looked very similar from about 1983 on.
If you haven't studied MJ carefully and thoroughly for a good while, be careful about making assumptions and comparing signatures by timeline.
