The problem to me is that Mantle signed so many baseballs, many while he was in a hurry and walking.  I have seen him do so in person a few times.  In every case, I have never seen a sloppy Mantle signature when he was doing this.  He was so skilled at writing his name and had much more practice than anyone can imagine while on the go.  If he had a tendency to get sloppy like on this ball, then we would see many more like this, but I haven't.

I have a signed AL baseball signed by Mantle in person. The ball in these photos looks very good to me. I am can't. Speak for the others.

I should have added he was in the last years of his life but it was prior to his liver transplant. He was sober and pleasant.
