What's the description of it and please post all the images.
Hi Steve, it appears to be a signed Christmas card written by Gehrig dated Dec 17, 1927
This is the only photo I have, I can upload more in a few days
Both the seller and I are not familiar with baseball sigs, other than this could be pricey if real
Hi Bryan,
The handwriting and signature look circa the late '20s but they've been practicing forging Ruth and Gehrig for 50+ years. It's close enough that I'd send pics to Beckett for a signature review, it's no more than $15. I'd say have PSA give it a quick opinion at about the same price but it has to be listed for sale on eBay or an auction or dealer's site for them to look at it. I'd have both look at it if they'd do it.
Hi Bryan - I would second Steve's recommendation to have an authenticator at least give it a look.
I did do a quick search under "Lou Gehrig Christmas card" and several examples popped up (he must have enjoyed Christmas!). Here's one from Heritage Auctions. The "G" on your example is somewhat atypical from what I can tell. Also, I don't know if it makes any difference or not, but the address and note sides of your postcard look to be in two different hands.
All 4 look pretty well the same. Will you have return privileges on it? There's nothing like having something like this in hand to examine. No scan can beat that. Also, if you wanted, you could then ship it off to a TPA to get their verdict.
I don't like it. Viewed upside and backward there are indeed formation difference and slants/small things. Baseline too. Only one "Lou" slants down of the 4. Spatial relations too. I would avoid it. Try ACOA?
Just look at the tip of the "r" in "Gehrig" - tilting the opposite direction to the RR exemps. Or the negative space inside the top loop of the "L".
Thanks again
Yes in theory I could do that
However, it would cost $400-500 to get a TPA on the Gehrig after fees and shipping with an unknown turnaround time
Any other opinions please let me know
With that long "inscription" I wouldn't just be focusing on the signature. I'd be comparing the other words to any and all handwriting examples I could find.
Also, someone suggested that the address and message are in different hands. Maybe they are, or maybe you are supposed to think they are. But compare the capital "M"s and "W"s....
Yes of course. I found things I like and things I didn't like.
I am still on the fence, which is why I am trying to get other opinions.
Format-wise, it looks similar to this one below. Gehrig seems to put more curves to his writings on the address side of the postcards. I am yet to find an example with the "M's" or "H's" on my example though.
