Hey guys! I would probabaly like to buy myself for my birthday this Ray Charles autograph..is it genuine in your eyes?Cheers, Christian:)
Because Innuendo on this website said that his Freddie Mercury signature was fake...so I am curious..
Yes I've read that too which is borne out by how few real ones you actually see out there.
you were able to talk with ray? that is great in its own right
Quite jealous looking at your picture that you've met Alice Cooper. I've seen him many times live but never met him. Going to see him this year on tour with his original band revival segment as part of the show. My friend Paul did meet him several times on Cooper's visits into Birmingham as Paul sells retro clothing and a lot of leather jackets and along with Paul there are two dealers in Birmingham and surrounding areas that get a steady flow of Rock acts buying stuff off them, of which Alice Cooper has been one of his customers.
This is another Ray Charles that I believe is genuine, and it's similar to the ones on the photo in the book and the program. It's signed on a Peggy Lee program that was purchased for $10 at an estate sale in Beverly Hills in about 2013-2014. The "Mr + Mrs" was probably written by Ray's wife at the time:
When was the autograph taken and where?
1961 give or take a year. I don't have an image of the program handy. In a nightclub in NY or NJ.
Hi Steve,
I didn't realize you had posted an image of my Ray Charles signature. Since you have, it might interest people to know that it will be auctioned by RR Auction starting this Thursday, March 8 thru March 15, 2018. Here is the RR Auction link for people to see the listing with more photos: https://www.rrauction.com/preview_itemdetail.cfm?IN=5115
The item that Mr. Charles signed, in 1961, was a Menu from Back Street Restaurant in NYC. Along with Mr. Charles, Quincy Jones and Peggy Lee inscribed the menu for a mutual friend during his birthday party.
It's a remarkable item.
SB,
I love your piece, and I know it well! I've seen it in person. It has the same characteristics as the one I had, and the one owned by A Pug Called Eva.
Real Ray Charles autographs are as rare and hen's teeth.
Yours was purchased at an entertainment industry executive's estate sale in Beverly Hills about five years ago.
I remember that you had one. I really am no expert, but it is amazing how similar yours was. Mine actually came from the estate of the man that them menu was given to back in 1961. It was his birthday they were celebrating at the restaurant.
Hi SB, I think my example from 1962 was even more similar to yours (see comparison below). Were you the lucky one that picked it up at the garage sale? I'm not intending to sell mine but obviously I hope you do very well at the auction. I still can't quite believe my luck finding something like my signed programme lying on the ground at a flea market in Switzerland.
Hi pug, It was great to be able to see all of the examples posted by you and Steve. Yours is extremely similar and I was surprised to see it. We both seemed to have had a rare find. It is remarkable that you discovered yours in a flea market in Switzerland. That's like finding a needle in a haystack. As I mentioned in my last posting, mine came from the estate of the man who received the menu for his birthday in 1961, from Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, and Peggy Lee. What a circle of friends!
Hi again SB, yes, the similarities are remarkable, particularly if you consider that Ray couldn't see what he was writing. I'm intrigued to know if you were actually the person who paid the $10 at the garage sale or whether you bought it after it had been through the "food chain". I paid considerably more than $10 by the way even though it was on the floor. Nothing much goes cheap in Zurich.
