My friend Phil and I drove up to Warrington a few weeks ago to meet with them and we were impressed with their knowledge of what I'd got. They know their stuff. We also got a chance to see George Harrison's Mercedes Benz before its buyer picked it up.

So you're Phil's collector friend!

I'm glad Omega recognized that the postcard was a stamp. It's clear if you know what to look for.

The Ray Charles signed newspaper has the basic characteristics of his autograph, but it's much smoother, polished and more even than the one I had and the two others that RR sold a few months ago. For example, look at how uniform the angles of the letters are.

I think it's likely that this is an early secretarial.

Only I met Ray in person to get this back in 1963. No secretary. Just my friend and I and Ray and one other man.

It's Omega auctions in UK and there will be 500 lots from various people but including my Ray Charles, some of my Beatles and many of the other autographs I collected through 1962-1964. In total I've given them 1300 autographs from that time I got personally which will be auctioned through the year. This is the first batch to go on sale via auction. A hundred or so was on ebay for a while but now they will all be sold via Omega.

The listing itself in the catalog is the 1963 NME autographs item.

Lot 277 for the Ray Charles item

Repeated warning: Ray Charles never gave out his signature. Never ever.

Well, there's a few examples that contradict your statement.

And there is one currently on RR auctions w/ Beatles sigs

Have a peek

That's not true. Having personally met him back in 1963 I'd have to contradict what you've said. Might not have been often but clearly he must of some times or I was just very lucky.

Hi there Paul.  And you actually saw Ray writing his name on the mag?

Hello Michelle, there was four of us there at the stage door, myself and my friend and Ray Charles and another man whom I assume was his manager or PA but I don't know. I handed him the NME and the other man placed Ray's hand on the NME and Ray signed. He then did the same for my friend. I also got autographs from the Raelettes and some of the band also that afternoon. There is actually 78 autographs in this NME and I met and got autographs of each and every one of them through the end of 1962 and 1963. As for Ray we were two kids, I think 14 or 15 at the time and he didn't have a problem signing for two little English kids on his first UK tour.

Interesting that Roger Epperson has authenticated the Charles that was so hotly debated here. I notice that the other Charles autograph discussed in this thread was eventually deemed to be a stamp.

Seems crazy for an auction house not to take credit cards when they can get the fees back by charging a surcharge. The only reason I can think of for not accepting them is that they would have less chance of refusing returns.

Yes Roger Epperson authenticated the Charles and The Beatles and Stones items we've put in this first auction. The promo card remains a mystery. I believed he'd signed both but its possible he signed one and then handed us the cards. My friend - who died a couple of years ago - was there too, so if he was still around we could have compared my card to his to see if there was a difference or exactly the same - so stamped. In the end when discussing it with Omega we decided not to take the risk and we've put it in as a stamp along with the programme I got from the show and a set of autographs from the Raelettes and some of Ray's band which I got that day also. My feeling was that if he was producing stamped autographs on cards that there would be more around but gone on the side of caution in the end.
