Hi everyone, I’ve been looking at this photo signed by roger Maris, the auto looks smooth and not slowly drawn. Comes with no coa or loa, but it looks good to me. What does everybody else think

It’s good.

Thanks terrier, I just have one question, how did you get so good at learning/studying autographs. Are there any great books that have authentic examples of players autographs, i know that there are collectors who don’t trust psa or Jsa, and I don’t know what to believe on that subject, but I would just like to be able to have confidence in knowing that so and sos autographs is real. Any help is greatly appreciated

I, of course, won't speak for Terrier, who is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to autographs, but for me, it's all in the "eye."

There are no books (except for those that might show authentic exemplars) that will "teach you" autographs.

Nor will I presume to speak for Terrier. To me - for me - eyes, pattern recognition, time, observation, and more time. And looking at as many exemplars and loose examples. Auctions, what sells and what doesn't and why. Form, angle, slant, construction, how/where/when signed, normal placement for the item, salutations, pens. All of it. Paper, sizing, age, even zip codes, seemingly irrelevant information. Much more than I mention.

The beauty of this place is we all bring something different to the table.

PS - Learn for yourself, no shortcuts. Don't expect someone paid to say this or that to have you in mind over the shareholders. What is called"work" is actually the fun part - the research. Buying the autograph is the very last step, for me. As I have said before, if I can't see it for myself, I won't buy it. I start with the presumption everything is forged and work to prove the genuine from the junk.

Well written, Eric.

Awesome reply.

Wow thanks so much, thank you for the great advice

Eric, is also one of those here at AML who extremely knowledgeable and who has earned the respect he gets.

Terrier and Mr. Zipper (Steve Z.) also.

Thanks Chris, I agree with you , that you have to have a good eye for autographs, cause if you look at many authentic signatures and forged ones it can be easier to differentiate them. I've gotten better at identifying mantles signature. And question for you, do you believe psa and Jsa are trustworthy

AML, along with our fearless leader Steve Crykin, is so fortunate to have a team of collectors who go out of their way to help everyone without asking for any compensation.

It is a great blessing to have such highly respected opinions available to us!  Your focus on integrity speaks volumes on your character.  I, personally, cannot thank you guys enough!!

I've really learned a lot from this discussion, but do you guys trust psa/Jsa, cause I know there are people who won't buy an item if they haven't authenticated it, even if it's actually authentic. I personally don't know what to think about them, just want to hear everyone's opinion

Do I trust them? No.  Do I use them? Yes.  PSA, regularly.  I do this because the uneducated person in the marketplace trusts them and as such, items authenticated by them command a higher premium.  In general, I try to use the service that is generally acknowledged by the buying public to be the authority.  Thus, for high end beatles items, I would defer to TRACKS or Frank Caiazzo.  I use Epperson REAL for modern music.

That being said, my first line of defense has become this forum!  I know others much more knowledgeable than I have different opinions (especially Eric) but I wanted to at least offer the reasoning behind my perspective.  Again, nothing but the greatest respect and admiration for all the resident experts here!
