This is an odd specimen. Looks like a pre-printed card but the signatures are smudged. Has some kind of provenance but not keen myself - other thoughts?

They are stamped signatures.

they look like the autographs that appeared on beatles trading cards from the sixties

yes preprinted.. I have a similar one (only signed by john on the reverse)

when glossy images are stamped with a Letterpress like these were the ink has to oxidize on the glossy surface as it can't dry by absorption like on uncoated paper.  This being said the ink takes much longer to dry and any kind of movement of the stacks of stamped should happen within a day or so of the printing then smudging will appear like the image you have shown.

These are printed on the photo...I had one of these years ago...

Thanks for all your input. I'll drop the auction house a line.

These are pre printed. Usally sent to Fan Club members. Mid 60's.

i think i saw this around 3 months ago at a reasonably well known UK auction house that dabbles in autographs it had some back story as coming from someone a the bbc though it could be the same one at a more recent auction, i e mailed them to ask wether they were selling it as authentic or not they said yes authentic as the signatures were in ink ,i e mailed back to say that the autographs were exately the same as all the pre printed cards given out and that it was near impossible for them to be the actual signed ones it would have to be the actual one used as the print former or a very lucky real one signed in the exact spots     their response   genuine ,,i didnt bid

if it is indeed the same one let me know as i may still have the e mail if needed

It was exactly the same story this time - some "gentleman" from a charity who visited the BBC. The auctioneer was "Shapes". After I e-mailed them they said they would amend the condition report. I guess if you didn't request the report you would be in blissful ignorance. I had asked them to withdraw it completely.

Just happened to see it fetched £260 plus BP. Criminal!

Where was this sold?

it was the shapes auction that i saw it on my enquiry was sent on the 3rd october  lot 185
