I assume the Harrison was not genuine? Did you find out for sure?

Yeah, very poor forgery. I knew nothing about that game at the time.

Reminds me of the first autographs I ever purchased. I was reading the Sports Collectors Digest back in the 90's. In the classified ad section was an ad by a company named Power Alley located in New Jersey I believe. The ad threw out a few names like Mantle, DiMaggio, Williams, etc and they were being offered in lots of 20 for $500. Bought them on a whim and had them checked out. All fakes. Saw many dealers selling these signed photos everywhere at shows and they were also being offered by some big time autograph dealers as well. No telling how many thousands of these things sold over the years.

thank god for a site like this existing today

This is great stuff. Love reading all of your experiences. I have a few. Years ago I impulsively bought a signed Williams and DiMaggio ball for $200. Found out it was fake. Absolutely heartbroken. Same with an Aaron autograph. Started doing my research and homework before buying anything after that. This wonderful group here, really taught me the ins and outs of collecting. Also, the learning of autographs. What's authentic and what's not.

I took this question a little differently.  Several years ago I was looking for a Crosby Stills and Nash signed debut album.  Of course, Stills and Nash are readily available, but a legit nicely signed David Crosby is another story.  I was bidding on one in an RR auction and placed a high bid thinking nobody would go over it. Somebody got in near the end and pushed it up over $1000.  Although it is authentic, I have regrets about the cost and how impulsive it was at the time.

A little better result was when Perry Cox brought me an Abbey Road album signed by McCartney.  The album is basically mint and he wanted a little more for it.  On impulse, I paid about $800.  Looking back, that was a good buy.

The only stuff I really got burned on, was about 6 purchases from Gridiron Authentics.  Luckily, I was one of the few who was able to get their money back.  I have an authentic home plate with 44 hall of fame signatures on it that I used to take around the country for autograph shows.  This enabled me to get most of my signatures in person, whether it was a photo, ball, bat, helmet, etc.
