I would like to hear from members who have bought fake autographs and how costly a mistake it was.

I've made many in the 20 years I've been doing this. Walt Disney was my biggest in terms of cost. Marlon Brando was my second. Very costly too. Both purchased from big name dealers. Try going thru those hoops for a refund. Yicks! Will not mention what I paid...too painful!
Came here to post this same answer. ; )
Spent about 5 hundred dollars for an Elvis signed postcard...signed front and back about ten years ago. It was sold out of Germany. It was an Ebay purchase. I thought I was getting a great deal.
You know the rest of the story.
I still keep that post card as a reminder...
I've had a couple of expensive Fab 4 mistakes (£1,000 - £2,000 bracket) but one mistake I'm almost proud of was paying about $800 for a vintage George Hommell photo of a woman looking like Greta Garbo, inscribed in a Scandinavian language to a Scandinavian lady and signed "Greta". It came with a lot of supporting documentation so I was fairly hopeful it was legit even though I knew signed GG autographed photos are as rare as hens' teeth and worth much much more. My hopes were dashed when a very knowledgeable film buff friend of mine pointed out that the lady in the photo was indeed callled Greta but unfortunately Greta Nissen. Just goes to show that what looks too good to be true usually is. Hommell photos have a value in themselves but unless you are talking Louise Brooks nowhere near $800.
