Philip was always a great signer whenever I seen him and has been a part of some great movies. Never imagined he was on drugs. What a shock.

Well said, Mark.

A friend who is a screenwriter and producer cowrote a script, and was on her cellphone brainstorming with her partner about whom they wanted to pitch for the lead role. They both agreed Hoffman would be perfect...and seconds later he walks out of a shop right in front of her!

She got all excited, grabbed the script and ran up to him; made her nervous pitch and asked him--well pleaded, really--if he'd read it and let her know what he thought.

He said yes, and got back to her not long later and said that the role wasn't for him, but he liked the script and would try to open a few doors for her. He did, and it has a good chance of being made.

A sad loss of a very talented actor. He seemed to truly transform into the role. I feel bad for his kids foremost... and for us for all the roles we will not get to see him perform.

Brian, If you've ever dealt with someone with an addiction to drugs I think your opinion will change. I personally never tried drugs outside of some Weed but I do know people that are/were addicted to drugs and it isn't an easy thing to shake even after trying. Some would say we're addicted to autographs, does that make us bad people too? Should others feel sorry for our kids because we like autographs? We all have some kind of addiction. I didn't even realize PSH had a drug problem until after more news reports came out and he did try to stop a bunch of times. I do have to say no matter what he was on or wasn't on I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times and he was always very nice and great with his fans and I haven't heard a bad word about him yet.

I first saw Mr. Hoffman in the remake of "The Getaway."   I knew then he had "something."

Terrific actor!!

Very sad.

A huge loss and please keep his partner, children, family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as they struggle through this deeply saddening time. RIP Philip :(

I agree with Brian Burger. And Steve, perhaps you're right about addicts and if you aren't one yourself, but ya know what? That seems like good enough reason to NEVER try drugs, right? Here's my story: http://fox5sandiego.com/2014/02/03/philip-seymour-hoffman-another-c...

The simple fact is he had a choice when first offered drugs back in his teens and he made his choice and now his kids will suffer for his selfishness. I have been a Kiss fan since I was a kid in the 70's and look at what it did to that band only through the perseverance of Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley has that band survived for 40 years and if the health and direction of the band were left to the other two founding members of the band the band would have perished to the history books long ago. Everyone has choices and some make better choices than others.
