Timothy B. Schmit, bassist of the rock band EAGLES, and a member in that band since replacing Randy Meisner in 1978, actually stopped to sign 2 autographs for me prior to his So. Orange County solo performance at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, on Wednesday November 30, 2011. This very rare obtaining of an in person signature by TBS, was about as rare are rare can get these days as growingly, TBS has increased his "no signing policy" for anyone who he even remotely perceives as being an autograph seller/dealer, though how mistakengly he may be.
Along with band members Glenn Frey and especially Don Henley, TBS has increasingly, simply tells requesting fans an abrupt "NO" to autograph requests as the person asking or those in the crowd at wait, may contain a resale style of autograph seeker. Sadly, one of Rock and Roll's must beautiful voices and who insiders say is one of the most kindest hearted musicians in all of the industry, has adopted the "Don Henley attitude" of refusing to sign on the streets, sometimes in a not at all pretty way, making such opportunities so very rare, as the overblown perception that even if one individual requesting an Eagles signature, is a dealer, he will not sign.
That said, luck and good fortune was on my side as still dressed in my business attire from work that I left early from, and I arrived at the venue about an hour before his 4:30pm arrival. Making small talk with the crew and the other band members, I quickly established myself as non threatening, and very realistic in my two item only request, one of which being the below image of Timothy's 2009 solo album, "Expando". As Timothy walked up to the side entrance with his stage clothes prior to the show, I let him see that my request was first for HIS album, not an Eagles product. I asked him to please sign and after establishing that he would only personalize, to which I graciously and enthusiastically agreed, he signed the album to both myself and my wife. He then signed a 2nd item, the Eagles 2001 Tour Book, all ready containing Joe Walsh's signature.
SURPRISE/SURPRISE. I thanked TBS for stopping and did tell him that his very kind words he had stated about Randy Meisner, at the introduction at the RRHOF, was very especially kind indeed to say publically about the former band member. I actually recieved a smile and a "thank you" in reply.
Though Timothy signed, he nevertheless was not letting down his guard of suspicion that maybe, just maybe, or perhaps, just perhaps, I could be a dealer. The "look" he gave me when I sincerely thanked him and wished him well at that nights show, spoke loudest from Timothy and his abundant reluctance at wanting to sign. By the way, yes I had tickets for the show and both Timothy and the band were dead on awesome. His voice is sounding as good as it ever has and he continues to be an amazingly talented and gifted singer.
I can't thank you enough for your stories. You add SOOO MUCH to this website.
He played SD, but I didn't go for an autograph (as beautiful as that signature is, and as much as I dig the Eagles...sorry Mr. Lebowski, but I do!). But when I wear a HOTEL CALIFORNIA t-shirt, that cost me $35 at a concert...only to be told NO by Don Felder -- it made me realize that, other than Joe Walsh (who has ALWAYS been great about signing)...this band just isn't worth the trouble. I dated a girl, whose boss plays in a monthly poker game with Henley in Arizona...and he brought a solo CD of his...and he told that guy he knows well "I don't do autographs." Sooooo....great to hear you got it. I get nervous when they say no, and even when I tell them stories that ONLY A FAN would know, they can be jerks. Hell....they can do what Taj Mahal and others do "show me the tickets for tonights show, and I'll sign." It eliminates the dealers, that have ruined the hobby for true collectors like Stephen and myself.
Nice item! This speaks volumes about how RARE an Eagles unsubscribed LP is!
The horror stories of Timothy, Glenn Frey and especially (ESPECIALLY) Don Henley are built on instances after instances of the utmost celebrity rudeness. Yes, there are "some" rays of sunshine every now and then, however, it is far and few. I will never ever start another Eagles item, and probably will never finish the few I have left. Henley and his greed and his ego is so out of control.
Great story and a great signatures! I keep looking for a signed EXPANDO LP...they must be as rare as it gets. Plus I cherish my complete Eagles items, as I keep hearing those terrible stories about the guys´ signing habits.
