Adolf Hitler Autograph Discussion: Should we allow them here?

Hi guys. I bought an autograph about 10 years ago, made by Adolf Hitler in 1935 in Munich on a postcard and I'm thinking about selling. Does anyone have a clue if it is genuine? Have mailed around questions to different pages but get no good answers. / Marcus

And I gave mine.

I think best to let such subjects in on a public basis.  A private section could easily degenerate into a neo nazi hangout. Banning such subjects is not a good idea either from society point of view, because people like Hitler need to be constantly discussed to keep mass murder from happening again.

We try to live in an open society-openness generally  is much better than being closed-that is why a free 4th column, the press (which this site is a part of), is so important to the public- witness the press in N. Korea vs US press. Generally the public needs to know everything with no censorship (an exception might be a closed forum that protects members from personal harm, protects from theft of assets, etc).

So I say keep public-there are enough members that will shout down people who might try to use the hitler subject  to promote his ideas rather than deal with the graph subject. And if there are not enough members to do that, society needs to know that too and try to understand why..

Mao and Stalin weren't much better (and those guys even have statues standing)

You are right about that, posterguy. That's one of the reasons I'm considering this change.

And as Rick said, Pol Pot. He killed millions in the Cambodian Genocide.

I just googled the topic. Stalin was the worst, at least twice many murders as Hitler. The entire list is horrifying:

I would have never guessed Hitler was only 3rd. We've had a lot of crazies running countries.

Genghis Kahn, Alexander the Great both had countless murders. President Truman authorized the dropping of the atomic bomb. He is quite possibly in someone's collection.

I'm happy you are taking this under consideration captain my captain

You are a reasonable and gracious ruler

OK that's about as much  azz kissing as I can muster LOL

But in all seriousness, I am very glad. Cheers mate. :)

Plus... I would really like to hear what an expert has to say about this sig.

I think everyone should voice their opinion on what they believe is appropriate. All people are different in what they collect. Personally myself I collect music and television autographs. I would like to think of this as an open forum. With that said though I believe Hitler would be crossing a line. This world is already filled with such conflict so the last thing we need to discuss is the monetization of items pertaining to a man responsible for the deaths of millions of innocent people.

Goodcat and John,

Both of you are right.

John, I believe Goodcat wants his American right :) to freedom of speech and press. I don't think he is pumping his fist for or against these guys. He just sees the value in being allowed to speak about it.

Most of us would love to have an authentic Moses autograph. However, I think he is one of the Bible's men who took another life. So, is it up to Steve to put a number on how many murders is ok?

Nah, I say let it run and let Steve do what he does.

My take on discussing Hitler graphs. Though a despicable human being and I wouldn't want one, he was an important part of history. As long as its only about the signature and no personal comments and handled maturely I have no problem with it.

I appreciate everyone's input on this subject. I don't have a problem with people buying and selling Hitler autographs, as long as they don't glorify him. As many have said, he's an important part of history—and you never want to forget that people can do horrible things like he did.

What concerns me most of all is that even though we talk about a lot of sad and upsetting topics, especially identifying forgeries and helping people avoid them, AML is primarily about the fun, excitement, and fulfillment of collecting autographs.

When Hitler's name appears in the activity stream, it's like having a bucket of ice-cold water thrown at me. It can similarly kill the enjoyment of the site for some members.

If I could keep discussions about him out of the activity stream, that would be better, but I can't do that except with a private group. If I set up a private group for subjects like him, his name won't appear in the activity stream. Just that group's stream.

I know I said similar to this earlier, but I'd like to discuss the plusses and minuses again.

Thanks
