I will keep this post vague as to not make it sound like a "hit piece" on anyone
I saw a high ticket item at a potentially good price for sale so I wanted to get an expert's opinion on the item before purchase
I purchased an online quick opinion from one of the leading third-party authenticators and sent them the link to the listing
15 minutes after submitting the request, the item had sold. I received an email a few hours later from the TPA saying they were unable to make a decision and to submit the item in person
Now, I see the exact same item up for auction at RR pre-certified by the same company I sent the request to
Coincidence? Has this happened to anyone else?

I use their pre-certified service a lot. It's well worth serious consideration.
I think that is the "quick opinion" equivalent - then, if warranted, an in hand examination is done. Re-read what Joe said. If they were issuing letters w/o actually ever seeing the item such a letter would be wortlhess. How could they determine live ink and just as important, all the other things that an in hand exam provides?
I'll check it out for sure. I am curious about something else. Do you know if eBay allows you to post the results of a pre-certification & database info. in a listing if you are selling a piece you have had this done with?
I have them included with my listings. I've not experienced any problems.
This is a reply to Eric. Everything is done on their pre-certification except the in person review. That is necessary to receive their cert or LOA. Basically, if the item is not found to be pre-printed or happens to be a copy it will pass.
This is clearly stated online. RR Auctions use a similar service with Beckett and PSA in the past. It's a much more thorough process than a quick opinion. And you are paying for a full authentication except for the mailing and getting papers issued by ACOA.
Which can be done in a later date no matter if the item sells to someone else. It's in their database.
"Having the authentication service require knowledge of who is selling in order to render a cursory glance opinion could be a negative."
I agree.
Thanks for the clarification Joe :)
