1931 Dracula Bela Lugosi Signed Sketch Personal Gift to Friends w Original 1944 Return of the Vampire Still Death Scene
Hi All,
Here is a 1931 sketch of Bela Lugosi as Dracula by an artist whose name escapes me at the moment. He was well known for doing these sketches. I have his name with the autographed print. Bela commissioned this portrait soon after the film and had these printed on heavy card stock. He would then sign them as gifts for close friends. This example is in Excellent condition, with a bold blue early 1930's Lugosi signature in fountain pen.
The creepy thing about this drawing is that if you look, Lugosi can be seen looking both to his upper right and upper left - when you"see" this, his eyes appear to swivel! I do not believe this has been written about before, despite being a well known piece.
Beneath this is an original still from 1944's Return on the Vampire, which many consider to be the unofficial sequel to the original, and the still depicts Lugosi's final death scene as the vampire. It is a stunning image.

Thank you Eddy. I love RR, have sold stuff there and have helped out when I can with the odd item, but those descriptions were a bit lacking. However, thank you sincerely, as I now have two more to file away with my exemplars. I wonder how many there are? Mine came from Gary at Classic., who provided a lot of data about its origin. I saw mine at Heritage or some other site - previously sold.

Yes. I am just happy to have it. I added this production still recently to go with my 1953 35mm "reel X" of Glen or Glenda? from George Weiss's Estate (below).

Wow! That is quite something. Have you ever actually viewed that yourself? I heard you lent it to a museum or something that screened it but I was curious if you viewed it yourself privately before lending it out?

Thank you. Yes, I have seen it. When Bela Jr., wanted his people to see this uncropped film they rented out a theatre at DuArt in NYC, where we met then and screened the reel in a private movie theatre with 3 recliner seats. It was superb, both the experience and the film. Ir is much sharper than any known print. I think I told you about the conversation with Bela Jr. on the telephone where he had me impersonate his Dad as he did now know what this film was. I got an A+! Great times!

Bela Jr. - "...What film? Do it...with the voice, yes, do it for me ..."
Me - OK...umm...yeah, now - "...One is wrongk because he does right....and one is right...because he does wrongk! PULL DE STRINGK! Dance to deth, which one is created for!..."
Bela Jr., - "...A+! Now that sounds like Dad!..."
One of my best collecting moments. I have a candid photograph of me getting my very first IP Rock & Roll autograph, but this memory beats that. Once, Uncle Forry let me try on Lugosi's Dracula ring - that was SPECIAL!
