Hi,

I have been collecting Rock autographs (Def Leppard, Deep Purple, Axl Rose,...) for 10 years and actually no one in my family understands my great passion. It's okay for me. My son is interested in the music of my heros and  can play them on his guitar.

But what will you do with your collection when the time comes and the family does not know how to estimate its significance and value?

Great question.  None of my 4 kids are particularly interested in autographs so I suppose they just sell them for whatever they can can get except for a very few really high value ones like a complete Beatles set, an SRV auto, and a few others.

I am starting to sell off my collections. Finishing up selling my 35 year 1939/40 New York World's Fair collection of memorabilia; the posters, 35mm slides, photographs and large format transparencies com next.  I started with that as enough major pieces was stolen when I moved that the collection could not be reassembled with meaning for display. I have at least 8 other collections to work with. I will retain some of the best items of course. I will never part with my section of Lusitania of my Titanic salvaged hull insulation for example. Those are both literally irreplaceable. Apart from 2 photographic items bought to amply items already being sold as a small collection, I am not really buying anymore. Mt last autograph was either that September 4th, 1955 Gleason postcard or the 1974 Lenny signed promo/press still, and that is some time ago.

Probably 1/3 or more of this collection below is sold.

When the time comes I will doing exactly nothing with my stuff because I will be dead.

However, I have written out a summary of how items can be disposed off - what can go to auction (and which houses), which dealers to offer stuff to (and what to expect price-wise realistically), what can go to the charity shop etc.

I have also provided info about how to sell off stuff individually over time at, e.g. ebay, should anyone wish to take on doing that. It's not rocket science.

Took me about 20 minutes to write that document but I do have a database for reference which will make things a lot easier for them.

My kids take a polite interest in my activities but they are not enthused by them. Last thing I wish to do is leave them with a headache.
