I base the date of the signature on similar signatures om checks from the 1950s or 1960s - or even later.
Hopefully there are experts on Greta Garbo autographs in this community that might contribute with ideas.
Perhaps some experts will weigh in.
For myself, I don't recall seeing those artistic downstrokes on the horizonal lines of the "t" and "o" before. I also agree with your point on the unsure "G" as well as the rather unique hook pause on the vertical downstroke on it.
As far as the lot itself, "purported" is an interesting word choice: "Accompanied by a visiting card belonging to actor Roddy McDowall, from whose personal collection this photograph is purported to derive".
Close up parts of the sig look very slowly written and atypical but one's eye is distracted by the beautiful photo
"...but one's eye is distracted by the beautiful photo"
Imagine if it were not cropped to death by someone else. The careful composition is gone as is the gentle light.

That would eliminated this for me if the ink, and lack thereof, did not already do so. To me it is terminal.
The discussion here should be evidence-based.
An established provenance is always an advantage but what is most relevant when it comes to signature studies is the signature itself.
If you have any concerns about the signature or parts of it you should preferably highlight them and provide examples that support your theory.
It would be interesting to hear your observations if you have had the time to make a thorough analysis.
Other experts, if any, are also free to join the discussion.
As I said, for me, this item is DOA for the reasons I already mentioned - it eliminated itself before authenticity was on the table. I have no other observations for you. Eddy mentions a very salient point BTW.
I only recall seeing a very small handful of signed images of Garbo and all had inscriptions/ dedications. Couple that reality with the atypical characteristics and I'd honestly not give it a second thought.
I think the collector market spoke on it as well as it only achieved about 30% of the estimate before the added buyers premium.

If this had shown up in an IAA Europe auction, I think it would be even more suspect here amongst members.
Wish they would have withdrawn it. It just doesn't feel right to me for reasons that michelle also pointed out above. That's simply my opinion after paying attention to her signature for the last 30 years or so now.
+1 I am surprised they handled it at all. I have seen them refuse far less challenged pieces on several occasions.
Edit to add - I did not realize that was just 2 days ago.
Sometimes it comes down to who's consigning it.
PSA signs off on everything as well...so there's that.
I try not to think too much about those things...
