Would it be preferable to buy a $5000 JFK signed photo, or an array of signed pieces by various notables totaling $5000?

Always the singular piece. Always.
Thank you for the validation. I appreciate the response.
I think you known the answer to that question already, unless there are some "sleepers" amongst the notables.
I have a long history of making extremely bad and costly choices when it comes to purchasing signed pieces. I'm not a very savvy collector because I'm not in the mainstream of autograph collecting.
I'm not sure what qualifies someone to be in the mainstream of autograph collecting. I used to buy very regularly but for the last ten years or so I've not bought many things at all. The main thing is to observe what is going on at the most significant auction houses and to keep asking questions on this site - preferably before buying anything.
I think a collector can be in his own "mainstream" - depending on what is called "main" one not even need be actively buying. Research, learning. Observation. Studying the art of saying "no" etc. Trying to share with others.
There are some areas I collect in where I have few to no other collectors to interact with. It need not be external.
Sleepers. I prefer to go after those. More than 1 egg in the basket.
These items below are in my collections - the Houze lamp is somewhere between $600 and $1300 depending on color and when/where etc. Available all the time. The Underwood and Underwood chrome prints - saw one in 1989 and waited 36 years to find a burst of four in the original sleeve. Cost? Under $50 each and I found an original envelope of 4. I know which I would like to buy additional examples of. Even individually.
+1 to Eva.
I appreciate your insightful response and advice. I do get notifications from auction houses selling signed materials and sift through their offerings, prices, etc. I am able to see whose signature is selling for what and whose isn't. Of course, there's always the instances when two people desperate to get a piece get in a bidding war and inflate the price of a piece.
Ah, yes, I do like hitting on those occasional sleepers. That lamp is phenomenal. Last year a guy on eBay had nine PRISTINE JFK campaign posters for the absurdly low starting price of $100. Because he was a brand new eBayer with no stars, I guess potential buyers steered clear of him. I was the only bid and got all nine for $100. Mind you, individually, that particular JFK campaign poster sells for between $100 and $150. I then sold the whole lot to a high end poster retailer in NYC for four times what I paid. I guess that purchase might qualify as a sleeper or just dumb good luck.
"That lamp is phenomenal."
Thank you. There is one in the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks.
I'll be darn. You're right!
