Bill,
I don't know if your Gehrig is genuine or not, but I would not buy ANYTHING certified by ACE without it first being examined, in-person, by a recognized, reputable expert in that signature. In our experience, ACE is one of the worst authenticators out there. I would say that at least 95% of the autographs they certify are forgeries.
I come to realize that I thought I knew about Gehrig and Ruth autos but after reading up and researching I found out there has been so many fakes produced back in the day that its really hard to tell which are good and bad because they all look so well...it really is hard to tell and I really think you may want to send this one to quick opinion from PSA which may help
I am not an expert with Gehrig, but my gut reaction is that the last name in particular appears to be stretched out and labored.
Zipper, I agree with you. I haven't commented on this one because there is something funny about it, and I think you got it. the spacing seems way off, and the height of the letters in the last name seem disproportionate to the letters in the first name. I looked at a few of the PSA and JSA authenticated Gehrigs and the height of the small letters in his first and last name appear to be consistent.
Thanks everyone! I didn't like it either, but I'm new to looking at Gehrig.
I appreciate the help!!
"Labored" is a great description for the attempt to bring the "h-r-i and g" together. There also appear to be several stops and starts. What really bothered me though is what appears to be a really nervous "o" in Lou..took the opportunity to enlarge it...take a look
