I was looking at the Nirvana Signed Epiphone Les Paul 100 Guitar which is being offer for sale at Heritage auction. I have my doubt on the authenticity of this piece. I was trying to do some research on the actual guitar itself.
Here is the info on the guitar:
Black Epiphone Les Paul 100, serial number 1210133642
From my initial research on the guitar serial number. It should date this guitar to Oct 2012.
I know there are some forum members here who are expert on guitars. I would appreciate any opinion and feedback.

I dont know that i am all that convinced of the signatures either. But id need to see close up pics. But i will check it out later today. AS far as the guitar, i would say its likely that, if real, that they got the pickguard signed and then mounted it on a newer guitar to increase the value. You can swap around the Les Paul pickguards with the Epiphone Les Paul pickguards easily (basically the same company, Epiphone is just overseas). So thats what i would say was done if real, if i had to guess. Although, if me, i would have bought a high dollar Gibson Les Paul to put the pick guard on (if real). This guitar is one of the cheaper to low mid range models that Epiphone makes
I just have to agree. I'm not all convinced that these autographs are genuine. I try to figure out when this guitar would have been signed based on the signatures. I haven't read the description from Heritage if they know when this would have been signed. The signatures looks to be signed with the same pen, but the signatures looks like being from different eras. I will try to do some more research and see what I can find out.
I sent HA an email enquiring about the provenance of this signed Nirvana guitar and here is their reply:
This piece came to our consignor in a large autograph collection. The original owner has died and there were no notes with this piece.
We guarantee the autographs to be original. If you have any other questions please call.
:(
Looks like a dead end. I wonder if it's worth the phone call.......
It is at $1200.00 right now with a few days to go. :(
Someone is going to end up with a cheap guitar!!!
The thing looks brand new. I have no idea why anyone would feel good bidding on this, or why Heritage would thing its a good idea to sell it.
I do not know if these autographs are good or not.
But, they are such simple signatures, they could be convincingly knocked off by even a mediocre forger. There is not a lot of "data" to analyze and draw a conclusion with any degree of certainty. I echo the sentiment that I cannot fathom why anyone would lay out good money for Nirvana autographs unless there was iron-clad provenance.
I was just discussing with a friend who has in person experience in getting autographs from Nirvana in those days and he has a very interesting perspective on it. He mentioned that Nirvana was a band that existed before Ebay. The people that had gotten autograph in person were mostly fans of the band. They would usually have LP ,CD or Magazine Covers for them to signed. If it was a signed guitar, they would have brought the whole guitar for them to sign. He said nobody carries guitar guards or drum heads around for autographs during that time.
It would be interesting to know when guitar guards and drum heads started to appear in the autograph world.
And who actually started the trend???
