Destruction of historical signed documents

Lately i see a rise in sellers,flippers, e bay autograph specialists  buying signed pages at auctions like RR etc and cutting them up to form PSA slabbed cuts one i noticed today pushed me to post this discussion 

this one sold at RR as a signed page from a hotel in toronto 1968 signed by Hendrix ,Noel Redding and members of the supporting band on that tour the soft machine it was a nice piece with signatures overlapping slightly as originally signed and with the odd doodle etc am i alone in thinking that this was a historical document that could be tied down to a certain place,tour ,time and moment in history that is now ruined forever by being cut to form a sterile Hendrix signed slab i cannot understand why anyone would do that or even prefer the cut signature to the original piece , the other signatures arent worth much maybe $150 for the Noel and the same for the soft machine so splitting the page isnt a massive $ incentive so i can only think that these guys are offering a service with a demand for cuts  

what do other members think do you strongly believe like me that destroying that page and others like it is verging on criminal destruction or just think its a real shame to cut the link with the other signatures or do you prefer the single cut and think it doesnt really matter

Depends on the significance of the piece. There are two sides to every story and it is under the owner's control to do as he/she wills. I've seen Lincoln and Washington letters cut up to sell 2 or 3 words with a matted picture which does baffle me but, on the flip side, some collectors who can't afford a signature can, at least, own a few words written by a person of importance.

The one you are discussing doesn't appear to make sense as it doesn't increase the value in my opinion. All must be judged on a case by case basis. But, it's still up to the owner.

of course an owner do as they wish and some pieces can benefit from being cut but some make terrible errors in judgement and once gone thats it

Rog, your last discussion was a nice clean signed Hendrix vs a programme thats a little scratchy with photographs.

This Hendrix piece was absolutely butchered and is worth far less, IMO, than it's original state. It also could have been separated properly and become more valuable. How unfortunate.

You also have items such as this fab multi signed calander book that was anle to be divided and sold off as individual autographs wuthout doing ANY damage to adjacent signatures. This set has got to be just as important and valuble as Roger's woodstock item? Look at all of the certifcation!

The calander book as originaly sold contained so many important autographs clapton, bolan, full set of stones, plus many hendrix experience signed pages, all of this without any signatures infringing upon tje others. Although a little sad such a remarkable rarity was divided up. , we can certainly thank providence it was done so everything could be sold seperately to wealthy collectors and investors.

i agree the calender book is one of those items that is better divided up the signatures probably arent all tied by date or venue so why not ,the signatures are too varied and valuable to try keep together and they are already on seperate pages ,the only let down with it being the lined pages but thats a small grumble on what is a nice set
