Lately i see a rise in sellers, flippers, e bay autograph specialists  buying signed pages at auctions like RR etc and cutting them up to form PSA slabbed cuts one i noticed today pushed me to post this discussion

this one sold at RR as a signed page from a hotel in toronto 1968 signed by Hendrix ,Noel Redding and members of the supporting band on that tour the soft machine it was a nice piece with signatures overlapping slightly as originally signed and with the odd doodle etc am i alone in thinking that this was a historical document that could be tied down to a certain place, tour ,time and moment in history that is now ruined forever by being cut to form a sterile Hendrix signed slab i cannot understand why anyone would do that or even prefer the cut signature to the original piece , the other signatures arent worth much maybe $150 for the Noel and the same for the soft machine so splitting the page isnt a massive $ incentive so i can only think that these guys are offering a service with a demand for cuts

what do other members think do you strongly believe like me that destroying that page and others like it is verging on criminal destruction or just think its a real shame to cut the link with the other signatures or do you prefer the single cut and think it doesnt really matter

Your right rogers.  Though originally this was from eBay, where Roger sniped me and won the item - not that I'm bitter ;-)  So it's been doing the rounds and each time it goes round it doubles in price.  To Roger's credit he didn't cut the piece up into 2 autographs (which would have been easy to do as one was on the front and one on the back, and, though it may seem barbaric is exactly what I would have done (to sell one to get some money back so that I could keep one)).

Here's what the original front image would have looked like (though this is not the same signed piece, just the same image):

Here is what the back image actually was (saved this from the original eBay listing):

So here's how I envisaged cutting them to look (please don't think any less of me!):And finally, I believe I have recently seen the B&W image framed and now up for sale for about $6k!!!  Though sadly I don't have the link to where it is.

What a complete waste.

Way of the world, rightly or wrongly.  I like to think the Karma Police stopped me from getting that Hendrix piece as they knew I was tempted to cut it into 2.

that little cut is a masterclass in how to destroy a nice piece

Nate   that would have been a better option than the result we see now cut down so small you cant tell where its from  and at least with your option you would have still been able to tell what it was signed on and get some feel for when it was signed which for me is what its all about a perfect clean cut signature is i suppose what some aspire to whereas i like to get a feel for when it was signed and the scenario of that meeting so what its signed on,when signed and who else is on it matter more to me than the perfect signature cutting out that history from a piece for me is just wrong i can understand it if say its signed on an autograph page with other unrelated artists but not when the group tie in to a particular place ,concert etc like the soft machine and upcoming ones like the isle of wight multi signed piece which is far from perfect and a bit scruffy but will probably be flipped for profit and become a series of over priced cuts on e bay for months and months with no buyers.....unless a real fan wins it

At least Roger our Hendrix signatures are safe.

thats a few saved from the chop squad

Circumcision, to snip or not to snip. Oh , wait i might go and cut lennon out of my white album.

I agree Rogers.

What you are suggesting is not as upsetting to me as what other collectors do to turn a profit Nate.

It’s an incomplete set with a couple of lesser signatures separating the JHE signatures, so I can understand the thinking behind it. That said, this particular Jimi signature looks odd as an encapsulated cut, and I think it would have been more desirable had the piece been left as-is. Even if you aren’t familiar with the piece, it’s obvious that something else was there and that the signature has been taken out of context.

The context of jimi ,noel and the soft machine probably sat round having a drink in the hotel between concerts ...gone forever now its just an undateable hendrix signature with some strange squiggles across it
