Hi all,

I purchased a 1st edition hard back copy of "The Manipulator" by Diane Cilento back in the late eighties. I purchased it as signed. There are two signatures, Diane Cilento and Sean Connery. As this was before the internet, I thought it was a nice curiosity and promptly forgot about it until I was sorting out the attic this week. I have no experience with autographs at all, being solely a book collector.

A cursory glance online at their autographs would lead me to believe that they are pretty similar, but I would appreciate a more experienced opinion.

Thanks in advance

The signatures look fine to me.

That´s great news. I was thinking I couldn´t be that lucky! Any idea on an approx value? I haven´t a clue.

Thanks

James

Depends on the condition of the books as well. I would say $400 -  $600 range. Are you wanting to sell it?

Are you serious? WOW. I only paid £1 for the book! I am perhaps looking to sell. Only issue is the dust jacket is not that great, so I may look at buying another 1st edition and swap the jacket. Is that sort of thing frowned upon? I assume the other writing on the page will detract from the value somewhat?

I'm not a book collector but as long as the book itself is in fine condition I would not go to the trouble of finding another dust jacket. The signatures look great.

Hi Joe,

I assume the other writing will have an impact on the price. I will have a think over the weekend, but I will certainly give you first refusal if I do decide to sell. The cover is not in bad shape, but I am very picky over dust jackets. Thanks again for your help!

James

I sent you a Friend request. We can message each other privately on this.

these look nice  .  Imagine only paying a £1.  If Joe W doesnt take it I would be interested

I dont think it matter re the state of the dust jacket if you are planning to sell it to someone who collects autographs

Depends on what you want to do with it - I've run into situations before with signed books that were valuable but missing dust jackets. If you're going to present it at all, it's worth seeking out a cheap copy if you can find it and swapping the jackets (but make sure they're the same state - first printing to first printing, etc.).

The main value is in the signatures, but we book collectors are a fussy lot.  If it were mine, whether I was planning on keeping it or maximising my resale profit, I would definitely be looking to upgrade the dust jacket.

I have found many signed first editions, in charity shops, for £1-2.  If you’re prepared to put the effort in, it’s a great sub-hobby.

One similar example from my collection is The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman.  Lovely, signed first edition, for peanuts, but with a rip to the dust jacket.  I bided my time and eventually, after something like 18 months, found another copy with a pristine dust jacket.  It was worth the wait, IMO.

Gosh a Pullman!!!  I dont understand.  I never find anything great in charity shops despite looking but good on you  for findiing them
