Do PSA/DNA, JSA, and Epperson use the same Exemplars when making determination?

I'm just curious -- do all three companies use the same exemplars when making "likely genuine" or "no likely genuine" decisions? What database do they use? Do all three have access to the same databases? How does one company deem an autograph "likely genuine" while the other deems the same autograph " not likely genuine"? Anyone have an answer?

OK, I didn't know that was early-2000s. I don't know anything about their authentication back then.

I'd like to see some of these Mantles. A mass rejection of 100 sit down private signing Mantle signatures seems highly unlikely.

I never personally saw any of the items she was talking about. But I knew her well enough to believe she was trustworthy. The only thing I know absolutely for sure is that she did do a signing with Mantle in her store.

Anything is possible, but I'd like to see samples before we condemn the TPA for rejecting 100 Mantles based on someone's unverified say-so.

I'm sure you are relating the story in good faith, James. Nothing against you. But, I've seen too many scams and outright fabrications not to be skeptical. I would not take the story seriously until verified evidence is presented. If they got back 100 rejection letters, they should be easy to produce.

James said it supposedly took place in the early-2000s. I don't know how their authentication was in 2000-2002.

I completely understand what you're saying, Steve Z. At this point, it's really a he-said-she-said kind of thing...well this guy told me that this woman told him that...certainly not anything confirmable from someone else's standpoint. The only reason I believe it is because I know her personally. Her name is Beth Maggio of Leawood, Kansas. I haven't talked to her in about seven years. She doesn't have her store anymore. I think the store had become a money pit over last six or seven years since the internet started to put many collectibles stores out of business. She had money and only kept it open for one of her sons. She had a Ph.D. in one of the sciences, and financed the store through her consulting work.

I have been a JSA (Spence) Authenticator since 2009 specializing in Historical and Political autographs and have been asked for my opinion numerous times. While JSA has exemplars, they also rely on recognized experts in all fields of collecting before deciding if an autograph is real or not real. I issued my first autograph sales catalogue 49 years ago, was UACC President for 18 years, and ran my own auction house for 10 years.

Herman, I just very much enjoyed watching a video of you on Oprah Winfrey's show in 1983. Her co-host said he got the autographs in-person of the Apollo 11 crew and asked you what the three on one piece of paper were worth. You said about $75-$100. I guess they've appreciated in value just a bit in 34 years, huh?!

It was actually on a show called "People Are Takilng", apparently before "The Oprah Winfrey Show".

Back in the 80s some "stamp companies" sold Apollo 11 signed postal covers for $150 and collectors complained about the price.

Those same covers now sell for $12,000+

Wow! So accounting for inflation, that $150 would be like...what maybe $600 today...maybe more. For the people who got them, that was a great investment...to say the least.

A few months later, co-host Oprah Winfrey went to Chicago and signed to star in her own show. The rest, as they say, is history.  If you listen carefully, host Richard Sher told me to "be sure to get Oprah's autograph before she uh..."  He knew!

Fascinating...so you got Oprah's autograph before Oprah was "Oprah" and became a talk show icon. I bet you didn't know at the time you were sitting across from a future billionaire!

It was funny how the male co-host said his and Oprah's combined autograph value was about 20 cents. Lol. His maybe...but I'm sure hers has appreciated just a bit as well.

Did they give you that piece of paper they signed? If so, any chance you still have it?
