Probably because they're taking a wash on every copy sold at half-price -- I'm willing to bet wholesale was $350-400 per unit.

That said, I'm more apt to blame B&N marketing for having a disconnect with the stores, if they can't even identify which books are half-off or not -- especially a high-end book released less than two months ago.

My local store said that it couldn't be sold for half off as well. They said it was out of stock but the website showed they had it so I'm not sure if they just pulled it during the sale or what... but when I asked they said that's not included in the half off. But I'm guessing if you asked someone who didn't care or know the rules they'd sell them, which is how some people got them. Hell of a deal at 50% off.

I am surprised any B&N still has the signed book.

I was driving by one so I stopped in. No sign of the signed edition (or any others) and they said only the McCartney book was exempt.

Number of copies at B&N stores in NYC. It looks like they got a second wave of shipments in stores. Main branch in NYC had 6-7 copies this morning. Rang up as $250.
