STUDY: Jerry Lee Lewis - TTM real or not real

Steve asked me to start a new thread since some were having a lot of issues with regards to whether or not the through the mail autographs of Jerry Lee Lewis are real or not. I will post some examples of what we have been getting recently and some know in person examples. These TTM signatures are not cheap. You have to pay $50 for them to his box office box. The question is are they real or not. Roger has said that he has never seen Mr. Lewis sign this way and it looks to perfect - like a woman's signature.

OK guys , here is a major update. I sent the same Great Balls Of Fire picture sleeve in as Mark, and explained the situation as did Mark, and it came back today unsigned with big writing on my letter, saying JLL is very upset at this rumor going around and it is not true. All items were signed by him. So there you go. What to believe? I dont know.

There actually isn’t much new in this update. Chad provided essentially the same information back on page 9. However, we now know that Jerry Lee Lewis himself is upset about the situation. Not good.

I’d like to thank Jerry Lee Lewis for making himself available to provide autographs to fans through the mail. I hope that he will continue to do so.

Ballroom, you've made some good points in a very interesting and evolving discussion.

In any case, I am in agreement the questioning of Mr. Lewis through inquiries is a bit much and I can't blame him for being peeved. My advice to others would be to send a request without any potentially insulting questioning.

I know my goal was never to upset anyone. I simply wanted to be certain I received what I paid for. I was kind and they were kind back. It seemed from the comments here that all who contacted them were kind as well.
If jll did actually hand sign every example ttm we have posted on this discussion, I can see where he would be upset getting questioned. He has signed thousands of autos for free over the years and to start getting questioned now would be disturbing.

So where does that leave us? Obviuosly, he did not sign all of these examples no matter what he says. What's our next move? Fraud is fraud.

The thing here is some of you act like JLL is doing you a favor signing these, well he's not, you paid him for these. When I was in my mid 20's I was working for a printing company and the company was moving. The owner asked us if we would help with the move I said yes. When the day came I punched in and helped with the move. It was on the weekend so it was OT for me! Monday when I got up I could barely walk as my back was killing me. I went into work and asked the owner if I could have the day off or maybe a couple as I had hurt my back during the move. He said yes. I then asked if he could pay me with my new year vacation pay which was about to renew in a month and he said no. I said "I did you a favor helping you move" and he quickly replied, "no you didn't, I paid you for it". I was pissed but he was right and there was nothing I could do about it and from that moment on I knew what a "favor" was.

JLL is running a business and signing items is part of it. If I order something from a business I want what I paid for. If someone orders letterhead from printed in reflex blue ink, they want reflex blue not some color variation of it. With ink, since it's transparent, I can run it heavy or light and the color will change from dark to light but there is a known color match to go by. If we didn't run the color consistent like they paid for then I cannot get upset if they complain. If some are light and some are too dark and some are right on they should complain and I would fix the problem. In printing we have what's known as a PMS color match book. It has swatches of the correct printed density of the ink to match the color time after time, state after state, country after country. In signatures I would say that a bank signature card would be the same thing. If JLL signed his bank signature card like the ones we agree are known to be authentic and then he signed one of these "wacky" signatures and the bank refused to honor it, should he be mad at the bank for questioning it? No is correct answer because that is the guide that HE drew to compare his signature with. Someone questioning a signature that he SOLD because it doesn't look like the rest should be accepted. I could say "that is reflex blue ink I used on your letterhead" and I would be correct but I would still be in the wrong as I can print reflex blue many ways that all look different and if that is what JLL is doing and getting well paid for it then so be it. If he was giving them for free then it would be a different story but they are not free. It's a business and should be treated like one, he is not doing anyone a FAVOR.

That has been my contention all allong, Roger. Many of us PAID for Jerry Lee's autograph, and according to a mountain of evidence, these autographs were signed by someone else. Period. [Sentence removed by Moderator.] I have written to many celebrities in the past and gotten an autograph signed by someone else for free. When this happens, I have no complaint because they did do me a favor by sending me something. When I pay for something, it is no longer a favor.

I consider it a favor in the sense that he is providing autographs at a reasonable price. Fans might otherwise have to pay more at auction. He’s also insuring that fans receive authentic autographs. Otherwise, some could end up with a forgery.
