Authentic or Forgery? Need Help With Identifying Open Edition Prints of Marc Chagall's Lithographs w/ Autograph from 1969

Members,

I have two Marc Chagall prints with what seems to be identical autographs. I love the prints, but I am stuck with a couple concerns. I have done extensive research for days and cannot find another Chagall autograph with the year right after it. Also, are open edition prints numbered? Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Loran Milliman

Hi, sorry, these are identical because they are facsimiles with added years in another pen. Plate sigs (altered) at best (probably unlikely), forgery at worst.

+1

Agree.  Chagall is one of the most forged artist signatures and I have never seen him add the year after his name.

Hi Loran,

The autographs are printed as part of the print. Regarding open edition prints being numbered, that's a question for an art information or selling site. You probably won't get the answer to that question here.

ok thank you

if u can post some pics would  help

but as steve said there siigs are in the plates

there different printings or I belive they call them states ,just like when or how long ago it was printed will also determine the price.

art ;like this Picasso mirro all have factors to be takem into effect

Even a tiny amount of knowledge is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Looking again the images and details (double numbered, embossed, embossed signature and facsimile signature with added date), I believe this are just altered posters, commemorative or the like at best.

The possibility of prints from the originals authorized by this or that is there of course but these things often just turn out bad, especially with this name. That does not mean don't chase the answer down at all :) by all means keep us posted.

I just did a little scouting and saw that Chagall limited edition prints with facsimile signatures were produced. There are several different styles of signatures. Yours are the same, probably because they were both printed in 1963. If more titles were printed that year, it's likely they had the same one too.

Yours bottom one is entitled "Triumph of Music" in case you didn't know that.

Very nice prints. I love Chagall's work.

Perhaps those dates can be removed by a restorer?
