Do letters in a signature resemble letters used in non-signature words?

Not sure if I should post this in forum or blog, but anyway,

When a person signs a signature, do the letters in the signature generally resemble the letters that person uses in non signature words such as a grocery list? Or are signatures so customized as to be quite different? Can a persons regular written words be used as an exemplar for their written signature?

I realize that their are real exemplars out there going bothways, but I am looking for a general rule for the average persons signature. Anyone already thought this through??

Yeah, a simple question with probably a comjplex answer that one needs time to think about. I have no exemplars in mind, but the answer may involve a weighted average, mean, or something. This question has likely been answered somewhere in our university or federal system- maybe CEDAR. But someone reading this site probably has a great answer...

I'm certainly not an expert and I'm no celebrity but I can tell you this: When I sign a check or a legal document, I use a very distinct style that I have had for years and although it has changed slightly over the years, it's very distinct. When I write other documents, I never make those letters the same as my signature. I use different types of writing depending on the item I am writing and who potentially might need to read it. If it's important, I usually print. If it's less so I'll write in cursive. I also have a very distinct style of initialling things and the letters of the initials I use are very distinct and totally different than the way I sign my full name.

With out a shadow of a doubt the average guy like myself I would say the 2 styles are not similar...no question...I personally write in print with a left lean and in script with a right lean...the letter styles are not even close in my personal handwriting which is also very distinct...I would also like to add I don't sign my name in script in birthday cards Christmas cards etc. the same way I do when signing a check or anything else thats important...its actually less legible...for example Babe Ruth always signed G.H.Ruth on checks and not "Babe"
