Hi all,

What does everyone think about this Harper Lee signed book?

This is a handwritten letter from Harper Lee that bears a signature VERY similar to the ones in question.  So, it appears possible that she was using the "swirly H" for at least a short period of time.

More exemplars are needed to close this IMO, but I am starting to get the sense this topic is chasing phantoms. The "Haw" with a curly cross-stroke on the H is either an authentic variant or an unnaturally skilled secretary. I am leaning the former.

Very similar? PSA & OP bottom.

Yes, that is another distinct possibility. I had considered including yesterday and it is why I just wrote "possible secretarial". Agree - as I posted a minute ago, more is needed.

Yeah, I tried to get more information from the seller but all he told me is that he got them from a family in Alabama who was somewhat close with Harper. Definitely need additional information.

More exemplars, additional letters and other signed books from earlier and later would be good.

One thing I considered mentioning yesterday was another set of sigs that seem to share some characteristics. The simplest answer might be correct. I have not found anything about other known secretarials.

I wish I had my Photoshop program so all these could be laid out and observed chronologically from 1960 to 2015 simultaneously and commonalities sought.

Exactly, Eric.  And if these are secretarials, Steve is absolutely correct in saying that they would have to be "unnaturally skilled".

They might reveal themselves by appearing only at one period. Right now I can't say. There are some observable differences in form and execution - but why and when. Clearly her hand deteriorated by 2015 but there is a lot more to see, find and post.

Whatever the outcome, this is very interesting.

"...he got them from a family in Alabama who was somewhat close with Harper."

But not close enough for her to want to inscribe them...

Multiple uninscribed books looks more like inventory than mementos.
