Hello all,

I have a signed airline map with about 25 autographs on it. All in ball point pen. I would like to display this item, but I don't want the autographs to fade on me.  This item is 6 inch x 11 inch size.

Any help?

Thanks

Kevin,
I have been collecting autiographs for some time now and I have used many diff pens. I have heard that blue fades I have heard that black fades I have heard that ballpoint fades. Well I think it just depends on the luck of the pen, because I have something in every color where it has faded on one thing or another. So think if it wants to fade it does. Now to preserve the ,map you could consider laminating it then framing and make sure you use acid free matt so that it orotects and Uv glass so that light does not fade it as much. I ahve a ballpoint baseball signed by sammy sosa some 8 years ago alomost gone, I have a blue dolphins signed Dan marino helmet that is very light now. I have a white panel Jerry rice thatis light now. I have a joe paterno helmet in black that is fading! Good Luck with the preseving and let me know what you do? Until next time Keep Graphin!!!!
Tim,

I know what you mean. I have a Malkin 8x10 signed with a sharpie silver and those pens just suck. It was nice when he signed 2 years ago, but now it's almost gone. I have a few pucks that were signed with the same pen and they are leaving me as well. The good thing is this map is 35 years old, The signers are the Philadelphia Flyers stanley cup champs from 74-75 the ink is still pretty good. it's folded and everyone signed on the front. I have it in a pro mold 8.5x11 top load with tape over the opening. It's in a darker part of the room and the only light is front the room itself. energy saver bulbs, no sun light. Thanks for your input. If I find a better solution I will let you know.

As long as you use acid free and UV glass you won't have any issues, that is if you want it framed. If you are not going to frame it then make sure it can breathe (keeps dry) and stays loose in the holder.
Very cool. Thank you for the info. I will look into that.
Thank you both. it's great info. I will look into taking care of this item better

thanks again guys
whats a good way to display a signed concert t-shirt?
DO NOT laminat it. It makes the autographs worthless.
Even if you don't plan to sell it...think about your kids that might someday get it.
Unless you worked for an airline, and it's signed by low level celebs (tv show people that aren't big names and stuff), then...go for it. It'll never be worht a fortune.

Regarding the T-shirt, all the big frame shops (aaron brothers) have framed shirts before (kids little league, etc). They'll point ya in the right direction, but it looks easy. You just get a square frame that is big enough to fit the item.
thank you very much for the great advice :)
Kevin, we have been framing autographs for over 20 years for University Archives, Kallers, Alexander and other important dealers, museums and collectors.

And we following the same way for all. First ONLY use 100% archival cotton rag matting. DO NOT, I repeat do not use the offered acid free mats. These mats have wood pulp that has been treated but not removed. Over a period of time, they will BLEED on the item and create a burn.

Only have 100% cotton rag touching your items. Also, make sure they use mylar strips to hold the map in place. NO hinges. These will effect the area and cause discoloration or moisture depending on application.

For glazing use UF3 plexiglass or Tru Vue UV filtering glass. Any other glass will cause fading over time.

Lastly, keep the item out of DIRECT sunlight.
By the way, laminating is WRONG! If you dont believe it, try to remove the map from the plastic
I don't want to take biz away from Rick...cause he is the MAN with framing.....but.....have you considered a nice clamshell morocco leather case with gold stamped binding. Many of my collectors do this with smaller items. They put them up in a book case that way they can "display" more items. Just an alternative.
