Has there ever been a nicer, more humble, more fan friendly superstar than Johnny Cash?

Johnny was the Babe Ruth of Country Music—the top-ranking Country artist of all time and the most loved. And Johnny loved his fans as much as they love him. So while like the Babe, Cash signed untold numbers of autographs, the supply could never meet demand...and probably never will.

Fans who couldn't meet Cash in person often requested autographs through the mail. The common belief is that he personally autographed those requests. But between his demanding touring schedule and later, his failing health and vision, it seems impossible that he could have signed even half of the mail he received.

A growing number of collectors and dealers now believe that many if not most Johnny Cash through the mail autographs were secretarial. We want to see if we can identify any secretarial styles, and at the same time build a reference collection of no-question genuine Cash exemplars to help identifying forgeries.

Are There Johnny Cash Secretarials?
If So, How Do We Identify Them?
Help Find Out!

You can be an important part of the study in three ways:

  1. Upload into this discussion images of Johnny Cash autographs that you personally received through the mail, and tell us when you received them. (The year is fine, but if you know the date, even better.)
  2. Upload images of Johnny's autographs that YOU saw signed by Johnny yourself. Include the date or at least year, too. If you didn't see it signed yourself (like pre-signed ones sold or given away at shows), please don't upload it.
  3. As more and more images are uploaded, see if you can identify characteristics that are commonly found on Johnny's through the mail autographs that are rarely if ever seen on ones signed in person.

With your help, we can identify Cash secretarials if they're out there. Over time this should increase the value of genuine Johnny Cash autographs, and help protect future fans and collectors against autographs that aren't authentic.

Once we finish this phase of the study, we'll go on to identifying genuine Johnny Cash autographs from forgeries.

Let's go!

WHY IN THE CRAP DO THEY CONTINUE TO PUT THE D@MN STICKER ON THE FRONT OF THE PHOTO??? That just ruined it!  What B.S. that habit is :(

so they can advertise there business...we need to request from them not to do this or if they do then authenticate it for free for advertising for them....yea it hurts the value to some....

I agree with that ...I think what there meaning is they would like  to hang the picture as display as a standard picture on the wall without their decal on front which in that case would take away from the appearance. Thats what I meant to say as well. But any thing placed on an autographed photo does take away from the "look" eye sore I guess you could say...Ive been in the autograph realm awhile and this is what comes from the seasoned experts...

dont quite understand your coment. The point is why take away from the appearance of a really nice image with a loud clumsy looking decal. Place the thing on the back side in which saves the image and still gives the stamp of approval on it , just on the back side so it doesnt interfere with the image. Ive seen probably thousands of in person sigs on nice images then the authenticaters put there "stamp of approval" on the front as proof...yes....but its for advertising there biz plane and simple. Any high dollar collector or a person of integrity know exactly why they do that and do request them to place it on the backside...need an example...try Bill Gates. Hes a major collector in autographs. I dont support him but he is a major player in autograph collecting and knows how to have them marked as well so not to hurt the image or appearance. I am a pro musician and have crossed paths with many celebs and get signed photos from them to help raise funds for missions and such. Not saying Im a expert, just been around the seen. Thats  the realm Im associated with. Been rockin hard on the seen for a long time. Just trying to help....if I mis understood your comment, my apoligies.

You guys really shouldn’t be dumping all over the OP’s photo, which he obviously likes and is sharing with the community. While you are entitled to your opinion, maybe he likes it. You could debate the issue elsewhere.

Really?

It would be the polite thing to do. How would you feel if you posted one of your new Harrison Ford pics and then others went on about how ugly it looked?

I would agree when the Cert sticker is on the front.  We are simply debating the habit of Cert stickers on the front of a photo. I thin the owner get's the drift thanks.

Autograph World has the best system of putting a bar-code sticker that includes the celebrity name on the back side of a photo.

I was answering a question/comment...with an educated answer...I would never dump on anyones pic...I just see the need of knowledge based on a few comments here and so giving logical advice on how things would be more desirable to a collector...its all about perception I guess....which doesnt go well with a type A personality...my apoligies, just speaking the truth not dumping on my part. Cheers!!!

Hey guys I am looking at a few Johnny Cash Items.....Wanted to see what you guys thought of these..Johnny is someone I do not know a whole lot about his habits. The seller posted a tag in front of the last photo

I like the 1st and last for sure.  Not 100% sure on the second one...That's not a "No" though.  Just not sure.

Make sure the last one isn't a re-print though.

Wow--I actually feel like I can throw in my two cents here!  I'd say, "no," to the pink one.  Good luck!
