JRR Tolkien, Anyone?

This appeared on my Facebook feed. Weird - an old event (Feb) and I am not a "watcher" of things Tolkien.

Does anyone know if this sold? I so do not like it - it looks fake to me. Nice story and everything...just does not look "right" but I am no expert.  I have seen a lot of good ones, though, and this one does not compute.

It's particularly strange because I have recently requested info from them pertaining to a live auction item and the silence has been deafening.

How interesting! L & T are a very respectable Edinburgh auctioneer from whom I regularly buy books (not "signed" I hasten to add - lol).

I have a wonderful childhood memory of visiting their premises (at the time) in Rose Street, Edinburgh, with my Dad - a maze of long, narrow corridors crammed from floor to ceiling with dusty, antique furniture with stuffed animals and equally exotic items perching on top. God alone knows why my Dad was there as he didn't have two half-pennies to rub together at the time and no knowledge of such curiosities. 1960's.

I digress. If I had seen this in their online catalogue I would have questioned it and that price realised is ludicrous i.m.o.

I have respect for their "experts" but I am still not convinced.

They are a very reputable auctioneer but I agree with you, the sig looks off compared to  his normal and usual cursive , careful and beautiful   'elfish' handwriting
