Monica Bellucci (Città di Castello, 30 September 1964) is an Italian actress and model.
Considered one of the most famous sex symbols at the turn of the 1990s and 2000s, in her career she took part in several internationally successful films, including Dracula by Bram Stoker by Francis Ford Coppola, Malèna by Giuseppe Tornatore, Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Larry and Andy Wachowski's Revolutions, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, Terry Gilliam's Brothers Grimm and the Enchanting Witch and Sam Mendes' Specter, and has often starred in films that were meant to be debated because of the scenes of violence in them: among the best known Dobermann and Irréversible. In 2003 she is the first Italian woman to be entrusted with the role of godmother of the 56th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. In 2004 she becomes the first non-French personality chosen to activate the lighting of the Champs Élysees in the traditional Christmas ceremony. She was a member of the jury representing Italy at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival and returns to be godmother of the same in 2017, on the occasion of the 70th edition. At the invitation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, she becomes a permanent member of the Italian voting minority of the academy, casting the vote for the first time in 2018 at the 90th edition of the Academy Awards.
