A few years back I bought a collection of photographs of the Ostby family. The Ostbys were wealthy jewelers who lived in Providence, Rhode Island. Helen and her father Engelhart travelled on the…Continue

UK Antiques Roadshow clip featuring JHE signatures

Started Apr 28, 2025 0 Replies

This makes quite a nice watch. It was first broadcast a few months ago but I only just spotted the clip on the AR site. For once, the valuation (GBP 5,000 - 7,000) seems about right.…Continue

a pug called eva replied to fab432's discussion Beatles Signed Autograph Book - 1963
"Actually the 32.4%  must include the auction platform fee of 5% as the auction house T&C state that the premium is 20% plus sales tax on that premium (20%). If you bought from the auction house direct I guess you would be paying around…"

"Long gone are the days of 25% including sales tax at most UK auction houses. I just checked back and this particular auction had fees of 32.4%. I'm not sure if that includes auction platform fees (the salesroom charge 5% - or used to at least -…"

"Agreed re the placement of John and Ringo. Maybe not so ideal for display purposes. I cannot understand anyone who would be put off by the beautiful inscription. One very minor thing you didn't mention is the slight "bleed-through"…"

a pug called eva replied to fab432's discussion Beatles Signed Autograph Book - 1963
"Congratulations to fab432 for almost guessing the final price. fab's guess was over $10k all-in and by my reckoning it sold for almost exactly $10k (£5.5 + fees (say 35%) x GBP/USD rate (ca. 1.35) = $9.9k). I can already hear you saying…"

a pug called eva replied to Gratefulphish's discussion Any questions about this Jimi Hendrix Experience set?
"Thanks Eric. In Switzerland the term has only just taken off. It is used incredibly often by certain types of youngster. It seems to appear in almost every sentence I hear on the bus and sometimes multiple times in a single sentence. First names…"

a pug called eva replied to Gratefulphish's discussion Any questions about this Jimi Hendrix Experience set?
"If they look good to Roger they probably are good but I wouldn't say they are entirely typical. I've never seen Jimi write "Bro" but that doesn't mean a lot (assuming people even said "Bro" back in the 60s) and the…"

a pug called eva replied to Robert Glenn Jones's discussion Any opinion on this Queen signed Lp ?
"I agree with jimbo that these are real. The "Best" is rather strangely formed but looks right too. I would find the lack of contrast for Brian and Roger off-putting but I guess it is more important that the rarer Freddie and John are nice…"

a pug called eva replied to Will McIntosh's discussion Just found this: American Attendees of the 1840 London Anti-Slavery Convention
"I agree completely about the 40%. The problem is just getting to an approximate value. Maybe there have been sales of similar items to use as a basis or you can add up the values of the individual autographs and either discount the total or add a…"

"If you feel you must sell it then I would suggest the auction route (RR Auction, Heritage or somewhere similar with a solid track record for selling abolitionist items). Something as unique and important as this is very difficult to value and needs…"

a pug called eva replied to Trazom1's discussion Beatles signed "Help" photo

a pug called eva replied to Trazom1's discussion Beatles signed "Help" photo
"For some reason this photograph leaves me cold, as do the perfectly placed, non-dedicated autographs. Luckily tastes differ and obviously I'm in a very clear minority. The letter is very nice indeed of course and is hopefully not glued to the…"
